Upgraded bump stop when are they needed?

When running a 3” lift setup, is there a need for upgraded bump stops?

 

It depends. How are you achieving lift? If the shock travel is maxed out and your not on the factory bump stops you need them. This can happen with shims. For the price I’d say get them. Ekstrom designs @Coachbuilder1 makes a great set. Went on smooth in about ten minutes in my garage. I lifted mine threes inches in the front with coil overs and shims. If you do a spacer lift I’d say get them for sure.

 

I currently have coilovers giving me 3”. But have driver lean so plan to put a .5” lift spacer. So it kinda kills ur up travel?

 

From what I understand, if the shock is allowed to reach full compresssion, it will fail. Not over time but all at once. You can taco them. Bump stops are there to bump stop you against the frame and not on the suspension components against the frame. Cheap insurance when adding shims. AND
Yes they limit up travel. Ideally the bumpstop would take the weight right before the shocks bottoms out, but we're talking an inch at the most from factory. There's a thread on here it this is basically off a Tacoma with a spacer lift. He hit a big hole in the road or something.

 

Yikes. So what stops the down travel, the shock?

 

Nothing. The piston bottoms out and the weakest link gives out. In this case the bottom of the shock body collapses. If you’re swapping new coilovers in, most have extended travel and come with the bumpstop piece you need.

 

Although it’s not the same as up travel. When the truck is compressing the spring during up travel there is thousands of Lbs of force compressing so if there’s no limiter them damage is for sure to occur. The down travel is different because it only the weight of the suspension components. Most times the a- arm will hit the coils but all pieces work to limit together, like the LCA, Sawybar Links, UCA, CV axle etc. if you properly installed your lift your brake lines should never be involved in this. This should also only be happening at lower speeds while crawling which isn’t something we generally worry about. It’s the up travel you gotta watch out for.

 

When I offroad I baby the truck to the fullest. Being a daily driver and the type of terrain we offroad on requires super slow speed. lava rocks and the trails here are sharp so crawling is crucial

 

On down travel in a stock truck your limiting point is going to be the sway bar and uca’s.

Uniball uca’s can travel farther. If your going to be traveling fast frequently and going to full droop the safest thing to install is a limiting strap that will prevent the piston from over extending in the shock

 

I am dumb and am having trouble visualizing this. With a 3" extension block above my stock TRD coilover, am I at risk?

 

To be clear, this is what I have with factory bumps still. Will super bumps help or does the fact that they’re still compressible leave me vulnerable.

Superbumps compress to OE size when their spacers arent used.

Honestly I think for a spacer lift like that, the 1/2" or larger would be needed.

Not only that, your pic shows you are stacking spacers.

You have one beneath the top plate and one above....BIG no no. Your probably close to 4" of lift, if not more and it probably rides like garbage I'd imagine....you have no down travel.

 

Talking about the silver thing? Rides okay but I don't have much to compare it to. The black spacer is about 2.5" as far as I can tell (dealer installed lift from first owner, I'm second)

 

Depends on how aggressively you’re using your suspension. I’d grab some extensions for peace of mind.
