Fixing the JBL system

So after buying a new tundra with the JBL system I was not impressed it was lacking volume and base so after a bunch of research I decided to first try a new head unit to see what the speakers and factory amp could actually do without the stock head unit limiting the base and volume so ... guess what !!! The new halo 9 went in along with a idatalink meastro and after a few settings changes like amp gain and equalizer the speakers now sound great I may eaven keep them so the next step is installing 2 jl 10tw3 d4 subs with a jl xd 600/1 sub amp and sound proofing all the doors and the back panel behind were the new sub will go hopefully this will make the JBL speakers sound eaven better and eliminate any of the door rattling. so in my opinion the head unit in the factory system is the main problem the amp and speakers sound much better without it hope this helps

 

Agree, it isn't the speakers at all. I installed the OEM Audio Plus JBL enhancement system with a line output converter, and the whole system sounds completely different! Everything sounds great and is what I would expect of the system from the factory.

How do you like the Halo9?

 

Love the halo 9 fits perfectly and looks great tons of audio settings and a eq app which is nice no complaints people talk about bad resolution but it looks fine to me I've played some music vids and stuf looks good to me also got the 12 volt accessory controller which is cool to control 8 accessories and the maestro is nice to now I can see trans fluid temp tire temp timing engine codes etc I think changing the factory amp gain helped alot to it was set low

 

So you installed the Halo9, and kept the factory JBL speakers and factory amp installed? I am curious about this now, as I may want to add the Halo9, and want to keep the enhancement kit from OEM Audio plus installed, but I am not sure if this will cause any issues.

 

Could you elaborate more on the "line output converter"? I too got OEMAudio Plus dual sub option for the JBL (mine is a Limited as well) but I want moreeeee! I kept the factory head unit.

 

Yes its stock except the head unit and meastro rr and sounds good just needs a better sub I'm gona do a full system anyway though just weighting on orders to come in

 

Factory head unit is the main problem in my opinion I dident do the install so im not sure on the detail I think the mastro makes everything work like stock to the head unit

 

Do you have a picture of the dual subs installed? I haven't seen a picture of them yet and am curious. How do you like the sound coming from the dual subs?

So when I installed my kit, the subs seem way underpowered. I was barely able to hear them. So Daniel worked with me to get an Alpine line output converter to install. It converts speaker wire to RCA outputs. Basically allowing the aftermarket sub and amp to work with the factory amplifier. Once installed, it was night and day difference. The sub sounds great!

It was a really easy install, and it is plug and play, and you only need access to the sub. There is a bit of tuning involved, very simple as well-they made a YouTube video with detailed instructions.

The converter itself was under $50.

 

I actually have a lot power on my subs to the point they bottom out. Well, I honestly don’t know if that has anything to do with power.

How do you like the OEM Audio System? I am shopping around for a system. Looked at 12Volt, ********* and then saw your posting. The check out there website and it is a true plug and play which I like. I've also thought about building my own system. Do you know what speakers brand they use? The website looks like Focal but not sure.

 

Ok, what did you lose in the instrument cluster as far as options in that screen? Nav info stay? Curious if there is tradeoffs...

 

The OEM Audio system is fantastic. Not sure if you have the JBL system already, or if you would be getting the entire kit. It will not blow your doors off, but that is not the point of their kits. It is, however, pretty close to audio file standards. The highs and mids are really tuned in, and the lows hit really nicely. I was drawn in by the fact that it is a plug and play system, as I did not want to do a major install. I did not get the dual sub option, but I can still add it in at a later time. I would definitely recommend Dynamat or a similar product on the doors and back panel though.

 

How does that second sub mount in? Is it connected electrically to the other subs amp, or do you need to run additional wiring?

 

I’m pretty sure they’re both connected to the same amp.

Do you have pictures of the line output converter, model no, how is it connected?

 

Only lost nav turn screen but gained alot with the custom cluster on the halo9 transmission fluid temp is my favorite one

 

Cool. That makes it even more tempting. I had the Tesla unit but it was buggy and it seemed like you lost more than gained

 

How are you liking this head unit? I'm really considering an aftermarket, this one specifically as well. lol i may have asked this on another thread i saw you post on FYI.

 

I think it's one of the best options not cheap tho but you get what you pay for it's a great unit fits well looks great tons of options

 

yeah, i believe it. did it take time getting used to how it sticks up past the dash a bit? or was it never a concern?

 

Its fully adjustable but no its perfect there for me easy to see without taking eyes to far off the road it dosent block any of my windshield view in that position ither another big plus is the glare is not a problem anymore the stock unit was terrible also you gain a nice little compartment under it that is down lit by lower buttons

If you contact OEM Audio+ they will set you up. They prefab a wiring harness for you and give you instructions on how to set it all up. It basically connects between the quick sync wiring harness and the OEM Audio+ amp on the sub. Really easy. Only cost $40.

I agree with Heff - I too got the sound upgrade from OEM Audio +. Those guys are amazing. Sound is too. Crisp highs and good lows - but not too loud. I went with the single sub and they put a control knob under the dash. What I would really like to do now is get an Apple Car Play integration kit but so far they are either elusive, expensive or non existent. The guys from Korea have gone underground.

 

I have the OEM Audio JBL upgrade system for my 2017 1794. After installing and double checking everything, I was really unimpressed with the sound. The factory 6x9's front door speaker were much cleaner sounding, the highs were markedly better with the OEM Audio tweeters, but something was off. Reading posts on several Tundra forums and speaking with Tundra owners that have the OEM Audio system, recently ITOWJKS. It appears we have common issues, namely the sub bottoming out. One of the dramatic positive changes I had was setting my iPhone music EQ to "flat" , I had the iPhone music EQ set to "off". The flat setting was a game changer. An issue I was experiencing, connecting my iPhone via Bluetooth to the stock Tundra head unit, the volume on the iPhone was over powering the system which resulted in distortion similar to setting the head unit max volume. Any/all genres of music would bottom out the sub. The "flat" EQ setting (iPhone) appears to tone that issue down and wake up the OEM Audio overall sound, and for whatever reason I now have the phone volume on full, before it was 60% full volume. I spoke with Daniel and have the 2nd being ship to me. With the 2nd sub, they use jumper connectors to power both subs from the amp on the single sub system. According to Daniel the amp has plenty of power for the 2 sub system. I will definitely talk to him about the line output converter.

I've had the OEM Audio sub level control floating loose in my center box since I installed the system. The bright blue LED and bulky surface mount case, I just couldn't find a location to mount it that I would be happy with. My solution was to strip the sub level control out of the case, and mount just the dial in the center console. With my arm resting on the center box lid, its an easy reach to adjust on the go.

Like the location of the sub audio control, it looks super clean. I wonder how different would the system sound with the line output controller installed.

 

With your Tundra being a Limited model, did you get the full QEM Audio+ kit? I am curious about the line output converter, if it works with both the full non-JBL and JBL upgrade kits.
