Sequoia and Tundra, Who Owns Both?

Hello all. Here is my predicament:
I own a 2010 Sequoia Limited, 5.7. We love it. We have 3 kids aged 4-7 so this has been the perfect family vehicle, we are not getting rid of it. The problem is, I need a truck. I have pretty firmly settled on a Tundra with another 5.7. It will be used for:
- Home improvements runs
- Pulling 8' utility trailer
- Pulling 16' heavy equipment trailer
- Winter weather vehicle
- Occasional mild off-roading (will have all terrain tires)
- General "truck stuff"

The question I want to ask is, who owns both a Sequoia and a Tundra, and which Tundra did you go with any why? The Double Cab or Crew Max?

I could see many instances where I would want both the 6.5 bed and the large back seat for the 3 kids but need more input deciding which direction. Thank you in advance for any insight!

 

We have a '19 Cm and a '14 4Runner. Im seriously thinking Sequoia to replace 4Runner. Its just the wife and I now(kids grown up) but I like the bigger vehicle.

About the poll....what are your plans for the truck CM has shorter bed than the DC. More space inside for rear passengers in the CM also but the DC seems to be adequate for most folks. I prefer the longer bed so we got a DC. My $0.02

We have a 2012 Sequoia sr5 and 2016 tundra crewmax. 2 boys, 2 dogs. I had a 2007 DC when my 1st son was born, when he was growing up, his seat was in the middle and his feet were right between us on the center console. Very tight for car seats. With the crewmax couldn't reach the seat backs.

 

We have a 2015 Sequoia and 2018 Tundra Crewmax. The Crewmax has even more legroom in the back seats than the Sequoia. Not having my girls put their feet on the back of the seats was worth the sacrifice in bed length. We also have 2 dogs, so going for the Crewmax was an easy choice for us. I had a Tacoma before the Crewmax and it was way too cramped for everyone with carseats and gear.

 

So I have the first GEN Sequoia. Although it’s surprisingly roomy. I also have a double cab. I wanted the 6.5 foot bed so I could sleep back there if needed. It also comes in handy when you have a wife that likes to bring everything when you go on trips.

You already have the family ride, so the question is, do you really need a truck that can hold the entire family as comfortably as the Sequoia ? If you do the crew Max has a lot of room. My family is just the three of us. And my daughter is really short. Her and her friend can sit in the back pretty comfortably. But it is nowhere near the amount of space a crew max has. A crew max is so big it’s almost about 6 inches too much as far as wasted space goes in my eyes. I can sit in the back of a CM and cross my legs without my foot hitting the seat in front of me. I came from a single cab in the past so the double cab was plenty for me. I wanted the big bed. But most crew max guys will tell you that they get everything done they need to do with the 5.5 bed.

So you’re going to have to decide, do I need that extra foot of bed space or the extra foot of cab space. I say get your family down to the dealer and stuff everybody in there and see which one you like.

 

5.5 bed really ain’t that big. Since it’s a second vehicle I’d say go big

 

I strongly disagree. He already has the Sequoia for family trips. He's buying the Tundra for "truck stuff" so get the DC with the bigger bed. Your kids will all fit in the back seat of the DC for short trips just fine. I know because I rode in the back of my DC for a couple of hours once and I'm 6'2" and it was perfectly fine.

 

You need another option on your poll. Crew max, Double cab, and Sequoia.

 

Yes this is my dilema, I know there are multiple times when i would want the 6.5 bed. For lumber and such. But as soon as i put all 3 kids in the back im afraid i will regret getting a DC. Every forum i read it never sounds like a CW owner regrets going with it over a DC.

The plan is to keep this truck for 10 years. I have a 2000 4runner this truck will be replacing and that has lasted me the past 10 years.

 

Yeah taking them to the dealer might be best. My gut tells me to go with a truck and not another hauler. My concern though is that in 5 years my kids will be 9, 11, and 13 and i would regret the smaller cab.

I guess my real question for you all is if you had a sequoia already, and an 8’ and 16’ trailer, which tundra would you get?

 

Do you plan on long road trips with three kids sitting in the backseat pulling a travel trailer? If the answer is yes I think you should opt for the crew max. But you can pull those trailers with the Sequoia too! So if that’s the case get a truck for the bed space. What do you plan on putting in the back of the truck? You can also get a bed extender for the crew max.

I guess I am no help because I go back-and-forth LOL

 

We’ve had three Platinum Sequoias, 2008, 2012 and 2016 currently. I have had a crew max2012 SR5 Tundra and currently have a 2019 Platinum Tundra. The crew max is nice and roomy, the kids wouldn’t be cramped. I liked the Platinum exterior and interior. I don’t haul or tow anything anything with it, I have other options for that.

 

Thank you all for the input. The truck would be used mostly as a truck in the summer as i commute in a car, but then it would be driven almost daily in the winter on my hour long commute To work. Since that would include picking the kids up from school and daycare, i think the CM is the way to go.

Plus my dad has a DC and my wife said it was too cramped and she would never want to ride in it with the kids. We never all go in the 4runner anymore because it is to cramped unless its a total blizzard out.

Go with the CM. You NEED the rolldown rear window so you can roll it down every time you’re in front of a GM/ram/ford and make them jealous. (U could even stick the lumber through the window if extra room is needed)

But you def won’t have any issues fitting teenage kids in the back seat of a dc either.

 

Lol yes this for sure. I always use the roll down windows in the sequoia and 4runner. That truly is a must have.

 

I'd go Crew Max for the interior space, especially with the family. I know this isn't really a solution to the shorter bed, but maybe a bed extender would help for longer loads?

 

I say CM for some of the same reasons as others and for this also.
My truck is not the family vehicle, but I would rather my family or friends be comfortable every time they are with me. The amount of time you use the bed will always be less than the somebody being in the rear seats, with your family.

To solve the longer items not fitting in a 5.5' bed I put a rack that goes on or comes off in 2minutes. This made all the difference, and has been the best both worlds. So far I've carried 20ft pipe on the rack, 14 hay bales and motorcycles in the bed. Everything can be done outside the cab with a CM but you can't beat the space you gain inside for you and your family. What would you prefer? The 2X4's be comfortable in the bed, or your 3 kids...

Thank you, this is exactly what I wanted to see. I had forgotten about those ladder rack setups and that will completely solve my issue of long load items.

 

What brand rack is that?

 

I say Crew Max 100%. I have never felt limited by the size of the bed. An 8' board won't completely fit in either but I don't work out of it every day. We're talking Home Depot trips on weekends, dogs, the occasional mower or motorcycle and some restaurant equipmnet. I also have never regretted having the big back seat. You can get a ton back there with the seats folded up and some full grown adults quite comfortably when the seats are down.

 

16 Landcruiser and 11 Tundra Limited love them both. Hope to have the Landcruiser soon. Had a 2014 Sequoia Platinum and loved it.

With having trailers go with the CM. Kids will love it and the rear window turns your 5.5ft bed into an almost 8ft

 

Something you may not have considered is what's going to replace the Sequoia? Don't just make your decision based on today but also the future.

I I own a Gen 1 Sequoia and a CM Gen 3 Tundra. What I replace the Sequoia with will partly be based on running the CM. No kids just a back seat for Labradors.
