New Tundra Break In Transmission?

I'm a proud owner of a new 2016 SR5. This is the first new vehicle I've ever owned. I've driven trucks for years but this is my first Tundra. I've only got about 850 miles on it at this point and I'm noticing some odd little jumps in RPMs when coasting/on the breaks going down hill down hill, etc.
I've heard of a Break in period. Would this be part of the engine/power train breaking in? Or any other thoughts around the engines idle bouncing around a little more than I've experienced w other vehicles? Just feels like the horses wanna run!!!

"coasting/on the breaks"........what do you mean by this? Do you mean brakes?

My breakin period was 3k miles, mileage suddenly took an upward jump from 16.5 to 18 mpg & the engine runs a tad more quietly.

 

Mine did that as well, it went away fairly quick. I forget how many miles though.

 

That is very normal... called downhill brake assist. The truck uses the transmission to slow the vehicle so you don't burn up the brakes. If you do not press the brakes going downhill at all it will not do it.

Yes, I meant coasting and/or riding the breaks behind a slower driver. Either way the engine will fire some increased RPMs as if it is as impatient as I am behind whichever grandma, or soccer mom I happen to be behind...
Thanks again, that's what I needed to hear. Break-in period and it'll smooth out at some point.

 

Mine still engine brakes, but it's more smooth than when it was brand new if that makes sense. The tach doesn't jump around as much.

 

Yeah, that 5.7 engine is quite the engine.

I just had my Tundra out in the backside of my property where I had chainsawed a big oak tree & got it hung up between two other trees at about a 45 degree angle. I couldn't use the chainsaw to safely cut the 2' diameter trunk so that it would fall at a safe angle, that tree trunk probably weighed 3-4 tons & I sure didn't want it taking an unexpected lurch in a direction I didn't expect, I would be dead if that happened. I cobbled a 25 foot nylon strap near the bottom of the cut trunk that came off the stump and placed the hook of the strap onto the hitch, I then dropped the transmission into 4 Low & it dragged that trunk into a perfect drop 20 feet behind me. Never do this if you have little or no experience at dropping a hung tree of any size, if that trunk does a roll, you could do a lot of damage to the rear of your truck.

 

Yep, my "BRAKE" in period went away pretty quickly too Newer vehicles have adopted engine braking partly because todays drivers won't DARE touch their shifter but for P-D or R. I'd guess maybe 20% of Tundra owners, ever use the Sequential Shifter,it'll prolly be the next feature to get dropped.
