Hi guys, I am having problems with my Tundra 2007 5.7 4x4. I am having a very hard down shift from 4 to 3 speed. Has anyone had a similar problem that can help me with it?

Can you be more specific? I know that the torque converter sometimes has issues with the clutch inside it releasing. Does it do it all the time or just on occasion? Does it do it only under light deceleration? Have you tried using the manual shifter to see if it still does it? Have you had any work done to your transmission (fluid change) recently?

Hi my friend and thanks for the reply, It does it some times, I have tried it in manual mode and also does it. I bought this truck last week and it has 164k. Really don’t know if it has been repair or something. But in the only speed that does it, it’s when it goes down from 4 to 3 speed in manual mode or automatic.

There's some information about the valve body in the transmission on the internet. It's possible that a valve is going bad. From the way it sounds there's a modification that can be done to help improve reliability. Just the other day someone else had an issue with their transmission and a couple videos were posted. The valve body can be removed without pulling the transmission. The two issues I can see is that if your truck has spent time in the salt the bolts for the oil pan may be rusty and snap when trying to remove them. Secondly there's a couple parts that will fall out when you remove the valve body. I would want to drop it down very slowly so I could see what parts go in which hole and in what order. Maybe either using a hydraulic jack to lower it down slowly or have a second person with you as you remove it. You can buy the solenoids of you could send the valve body to a place that will service it and do the modification for you.

I know this is an old thread, but I’ve had a similar issue with downshifting from 4th to 3rd gear when coming to a stop for the last few years. It doesn't shift hard, but it tends to hold 4th gear longer than it should and then downshifts late and noticeable to where I can feel it slightly under my foot. It only does it on occasion and under light deceleration. If I’m a little more aggressive on the brake it doesn’t do it at all or if I manually shift from s4 into s3 it doesn’t do it either. Dr_Al you described my issue perfectly. Is this the torque converter issue you are referring to or is it just a software issue? I have noticed if I perform a mod where I have to disconnect the battery it usually won’t do it for the first few hundred miles after that but then begins again.
