Help..... My Radio Reception Sucks

Like the title says my radio reception is horrible, most channels have some static and some are full static. I have cleaned the antenna and it gets a little better but only for a little. What else can I do to fix this. The radio is the factory 2006 Double Cab JBL unit. I do not like the look of after market radios so I want to keep it factory.

 

I read somewhere that there is an antenna that can be laid horizontal inside the dash. Maybe try a new antenna. Check the connections.

Put your hands on things behind the dash first before buying something. Test what you have.

 

I was just about to post on the exact same issue. We picked up our Tundra (2006 Double Cab as well), and the audio quality is decent with a CD, but terrible with the radio/antenna.

I might try swapping out antennas, and if you find a solid solution, let me know!

 

make sure anteanna is plugged into Head unit as expected. Maybe inspect the antenna cable for damage.

 

Get freebie XM radio like I did and pay a small monthly fee. 2nd gen radio sucks too and I'm being kind.

 

Im going to pull the radio tomorrow and check the connections. It is really bothering me that I cant listen to a radio station without static.

 

I pulled the radio to check the antenna connection and that is not the issue, I think im going to try a new antenna assembly and see if that fixes my issues. The only other thing I can think of is something is wrong with the current antenna base.

 

Have you talked with a local stereo shop? They may have some insight on the problem.

Before you go too crazy follow the antenna cable. It should be routed from the front fender to the passenger kick panel and up to the radio. I have see these get unplugged over time and can cause major static issues.

 

I traced it this weekend and did not notice anything wrong with the antenna. I think I am just going to have to replace it.

 

What antenna is on there? Is it a short one? I ran a stubby when my old antenna busted and reception was a joke. I don't even have an antenna anymore but if I liked FM I would spend a bit on a nice one.

 

It's the really long factory one.

 

I would try to somehow test a new antenna and cable without mounting to see if it cures your issues. Not having ever had any radio signal issues and thinking the Antenna is fairly simple, It could be the HU.

 

You can test your antenna with a multitester. Set it to ohms and check at the center pin on the antenna wire and the other at the end of the antenna mast. It should be under 5 ohms. Chances are it's ok and the radio tuner is crapping out.

There are double din aftermarket stereos that look good and don't require huge filler plates. You can get some new tech if you're interested in that too.

I test it with my multimeter and got 1.5 mohms. But Im not sure if I am doing it right. Are you talking about just the antenna or the whole antenna system from the radio to the tip?

 

The whole length from antenna tip to radio. Both readings will probably be similar but if they aren't it could pinpoint a problem in the wire if its not close to the same.

 

Just purchased a 2017 platinum and have the same issue. Very bad/static radio reception. Truck does have a stubby antenna. Has anyone else had this issue?

 

Fwiw, I unscrewed my antenna mast from the base, cleaned the threads in both, reassembled, and got subsequently improved reception.

 

I'm not being a smart a**, but who listens to OTA radio anymore? It seems like just endless commercials. I use these type units and stream via Bluetooth from my phone, or play music from a USB or micro SD card. I've had one like this for several years now and it has never failed. Just plug into a 12 volt socket, pair once and your're all set. And as a bonus you get hands free mobile phone. It brought my 2001 am/fm, cassette deck, cd player unit into the 21st century for about $20.00. It would work without an antenna connected I'm sure since it's only transmitting about 12 inches. Good luck anyway.

Thanks for that. I will try that, but it seems pretty clean. My guess is it is a cheap stubby replacement, which is causing the loss of reception. I plan to try a full sized antenna to see if it helps.

 

I bought one of those stubby antennas from this place. . . . seems like they are well made etc.

Very happy with the reception so far, but I live in the city so I'm probably not the best test case.

 

The OEM Antennae has a sporty look compared to Stumps McGhee.

 

I kept the stock buggy-whip in case they ever re-release those Orange 76 Gas Station Antenna Balls.

 

I’m looking at doing the Telescoping Antennae Mod. I’m sure everyone here will be Breaking Wood in envy. It allows 4 options of a Cold Reverse Shrivel Look, Stumpy Chub , Medium Tall, or the Extenda Version.

 

I'll throw this in there, If I turn on my LED light bar, my radio reception goes to crap. If I plug in my phone to charge, my radio reception goes to crap. Electrical interference can greatly affect radio reception too. LED's are bad about this.

You can also disconnect the antenna and just plug in some loose wire that you can cut and orient in any position. It should help determine if it’s a radio or antenna issue.
