Horn Upgrades, Yay or Nay?

One thing that constantly annoys me about pickups is the weak sounding horns.

Nothing like having a rig pulling 8,000lbs of RV fun and having a horn that sounds like it belongs on a Prius.

Currently debating between Hella and PIAA to add a little more oomph to the horn when its used.

But this is the one upgrade the financial manager, aka wife, seems not to agree with.

So I throw it out to you all. Is a horn upgrade worth it, or am I literally blowing, pun intended, money away.

 

I can honestly say that it is more about how it makes you feel than it is about how effective they are. I had a challenger force me off the road in my Tacoma and almost into the center barriers on I5 even with my dual air horns blaring with 150PSI just 6 feet from his face.
That being said. I like loud deep sounding horns.

I was looking into different hella and piaa horns too but still undecided. Just want something more manly and more bass without the hassle of a tanked “train horn”.

I bought a Stebel horn several years ago for my 2010. The model I bought has been replaced in their line-up but they're still an easy install, small compressor/horn combo, that's reasonably priced.

 

I don't think I've ever used my horn in 20 years of driving. So no...not worth it. I don't even know what my Tundras horn sounds like....or if it even works. I've never touched it. I'm not a Pakistani cab driver. If I want to intimidate someone on the road I'll just pull a gun like a real man.

Don't have them. Yet. I've been perusing Hella and piaa horns. OEM horns are a bit weak.

Well, since I've never needed a horn I think I'm pretty safe from needing to display the manliness of my truck. These are trucks folks, Not male gorilla's. Enough people think that anyone who drives a truck is just compensating for something anyway, no need to prove them right. I scrap dead bodies off the road for a living, a fair number of them got there by driving with their ego's rather than their brains.

Another electric option would be old Cadillac horns. They are pretty loud with a lower tone.

 

At the scrap yard, 2 Chevy truck horns. Add them on, keeping stock horns. One Bosch type relay. $15 for a significant horn upgrade

 

Not a bad idea! There's a large auto junk yard north of me full of older junkers.

 

Saw a trucker had airhorns mounted facing his blind spot behind the cab. Wish I could see it in action, would be hilarious....But for me, na, OEM horn is fine.

 

I have used the horn many times already since getting this truck the end of December. Must be my fellow L.A. drivers driving like drunken sailors thinking they can change lanes right into me without causing much fuss. The horn is wimpy, like starting up a conversation with a buffed out guy at a party, hearing a pee-wee-herman voice and trying not to snicker. I would like a better horn, doesn't have to be an air horn, just something more in line with what the truck IS. I don't want people to think it's a Smartcar honking before they see me. They need to know they are playing chicken with a vehicle that may weigh double what their car weighs. We have lots of distracted idiots on their phones watching videos as they drive and they are zoned out (latest one was Friday evening and yea I honked every time she picked up the phone from the center console, I have no patience for those people ). I need a real horn to wake them out of their idiocy. I am not the kind of person who avoids using the horn. It is there for a reason.

 

Completely agree with this one. People with cell phones swerving deserve to be honked at.
A lot of people do not understand how dangerous driving really is and take it for granted.

Go under the hood and remove the little steel covers from your horns. Definitely louder.

 

I would like to add a horn sound to my Tundra, perhaps an “ah ooh gah”, really loud train, or “Fight On” (yes, I am a U.S.C. alumnus) horn, whichever is loudest and most clearly tells the texters of the world to drive, rather than text. Any suggestions? (I thought this applied to this thread; if not I will happily move it.)

Just installed a Stebel Nautilus mini air horn. While I can't say as I like the higher tone much the somebich is loud as hell and really gets attention. Prior to this horn the wimpy factory horns got the finger or some other showing of intelligence. This fugger is such a shocker they usually do not react other then to shit themselves trying to get out of the way. Do I honk my horn all the time? Nope, my wife kept on me to use it and its been almost a month since install and I used it for the second time today as someone crossed a parking lot at break neck speed right in front of me where I was driving in the designated roadway around the parking lot. It was like I wasn't even there until I hit the horn, the look on his face was priceless. Next install is a front and rear dash cam...

 

Lol....thats one thing i miss.....living in Montana.

 

The horn on my Corolla was terrible so I replaced it with Hella Sharptones, I like them more than the Supertones. So far the Tundra horn has been loud enough for me, it's not bad sounding.

 

I thought about several of them and went with a Marco Tornado. Sounds so great that my wife begged me to put one on her suburban, now we both have one.
