I actually put this on the backburner. I have been traveling and working like crazy. I have some time this week, so I will update again. I did speak to HPT about my issue prior and they recommended I be hooked up to wifi and retry. Hadn't tried it again though.

 

This can motivate me to do a Supercharger. I was going to switch out my ECU w/ a brand new ECU through Toyota that I had gotten for my 2016, but never ended up doing it. I can’t very well use it w/ my 2018. I guess it’s time to sell it lol

Damn. That’s awesome. Looks like the powerband really cleans up and becomes a linear increase. Also the consistency on the power and is a HUGE change. The bullydog one is junk. I’ve been saying this for a long time. Having proper laptop based software to tune a motor is worlds better than any mail order or piggyback system will ever be.

I haven’t had a chance to play with mine yet, I’m at SEMA. This gives me hope though!

 

Yeah, I think I will be picking up one for Christmas. I'm curious to see what I can get out of a NA 5.7L.

 

how is it there aren't more S/C tundras doing this yet, i need guinea pigs to test before i buy one for my Sequoia!

that said, mine dyno'd 479HP to the wheels, are these 600HP #'s at the wheels, if so, holy $hit!

 

More than likely. I’m not familiar with Dynocom, but the options are either rollers or hub packs. Either way, it’s measure at the axle.

 

Isn’t 600 pretty much the limit of this engine as well?

 

i spoke to my local tuner. he thought he could clean up my s/c truck over the factory tune. i need to find some stock wheels tho my truck wont fit on his dyno...

What kind of updates are you looking for? At this point, buy one and get a tune with it. HP is huge in the LS world. You can even tune it yourself.

Also, I have been both very busy and the days I have been home, been lazy. I have some time during Christmas and will post up screenshots of the tables available, but this program is up and running. Plenty of guys getting better power, shift point improvements, etc with a dyno tune from a reputable tuner.

 

Seeing what the OP has done with his and what the tune has improved. No go for me as mine is a 2017 though

I ended up paying for the 6 credits and just saw that they lowered the Toyota credits to 4. So good news on that front. I’ll blow the dust off the laptop and take some screenshots, hopefully this weekend.

Have you or anyone else tuned their truck themselves? I just came across this thread and am preparing to install a supercharger, and this seems vastly superior to anyone else on the market. I'm just hesitant to drive hours to a tuner, pay a lot of money, and have the chance of getting a shitty tune if I can do it myself.

 

Do you know what table resolution is? How about the different types of tuning tables? If not, you may want to reconsider tuning yourself. OR, if you want to learn, read A LOT, watch A LOT of videos and have a good time. It can be risky, but it's good knowledge.

 

A new guy on the scene (RAY Performance/Tuning out of Louisiana) is claiming to have a Tundra tune using HPTuners. I don't know anything about HPTuners, but I guess you would need the MPVI2 to install his tune remotely. There's one dyno chart floating around on facebook. No feedback on the tune yet that I know of.

 

Yes. I wouldn't recommend tuning it yourself, until you get a little more time behind the laptop. Shoot... I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it and i've been dabbling in this stuff for a handful of years. Too much to go wrong far too easily, which could cause it to lean out and grenade your engine. I would definitely recommend a tuner, since chances are that he will put the truck on the dyno and get the most power/reliability out of it.

This. i have done the same and am still nervous to mess with the cal file. i priced out a new engine if I lock it up, it's a measly $15k......

Mail order tunes are dangerous. Its only as good as the guy who did it and my experience has been not good. I have ordered a couple tunes for LS motors in the past and they were just basket cases. This was my biggest beef with the DAP tune. Guy was shipping them all over the country, but just like tiger stripes, there are no 2 alike. Yes they all have stripes, but it doesn't mean they will play well.

 

So I finally decided not to be lazy and in-between my newborns power naps, I figured I would post some screen shots of what's available within HPT to modify. I'll start with the basic stuff and stuff that would be relevant to the guys modding on here. Not everyone is tuning for power, but some of this is relevant to almost everyone. I am by no means an expert, but I dabble a good bit.

Speedometer calibration:
You can change tire radius, transfer case ratio and final drive ratio. This is for the guys who complain about inaccurate MPGs and erratic shifting. This will allow the ECU to make the correct calculations and shift points. Plus, it "should" give you an accurate fuel mileage in the MID after you update your tire size/gear ratio.



MIL turn off:
This is the list of codes that you can tell the ECU not to kick on. You know, because of that pesky CEL. Just tell it to ignore it and it will.



Then you get into the serious stuff. For the engine, its very limited for what you can actually do. Especially when compared with an LS.

Categories such as: Idle/Airflow/Fuel/Spark/Torque Model.
Under Fuel, you can change the Stoich target, injector pulsewidth, etc. Things like oxygen sensors and Power enrichment are available too. For those of you guys that think the pedal commander is the next best thing since sliced bread, here is how you change it the real way...



You can also get into the spark tables to add/retard timing. This correlates to the octane fuel you want to run. Higher octane fuel = more timing = "generally" more power, but to a point.



Lastly, where I think all the real power can be made with our engines. This the VVT-i. With the available range of angles, you can keep the engine breathing well through a large portion of the powerband.



For those guys that tow a bunch, or for the guys that do end up tuning for power and need to change the shift points of the trans, that's there too. You can also change the tow/haul mode button...



Hope this is valuable to some of you guys when you make your decision to tune your trucks. My vote is always to go to a reputable tuner. Hopefully you guys find this valuable enough and tell them to send me a kick back with all of the money they will make.

I hear you there bud, but anyone with a dyno and a reputable shop that has been using HPT on LS motors should be able to do it. As long as they know what they are doing, you should be gtg. Torque management is trickier on Toyotas, at least compared to my crawler.

My prediction is that if you put some long tubes with a well placed/sized X pipe and a smoother flowing intake, then turn down some of the torque management and fine tune the VVT, I could see an easy 50hp+ pick up. Long tubes make a huge difference and if you use the slight increase in VE and tune to a 91/93 octane, I could see some serious power coming out these trucks.

It may be time for me to finally spend the $$ on some American Racing jobbies...

 

Thank You Luis @the_midwesterner good stuff here. I was talking with my tuner yesterday. We did a HP dyno tune on a DynoJet so wheels to rollers on my 2014 Sequoia with a magnuson supercharger. The tune turned out great, AFR's are dead nuts perfect, not as much power as I hoped for however in all fairness this was his first shot at the 5.7 (LS guy) and our main goal was to get the SC operational as there was not a tune available for this year Sequoia to support the SC. He did not touch the VVT-1 also I am running larger tires which he did not address either and it is my understanding through Keith @dirtydeeds who spent a long time with me on the phone yesterday as well that the larger tires make the ECU think there is a load on the engine so it messes with the tune. I am assuming changing to the correct tire specs will take that away. Luis Thank You I appreciate the work you put in to this info as to the capabilities of the tuner. This will allow us to sit down and go over the areas we want to address in or next session. Any other input you have would be very much appreciated.
