The hyperdrive on my Tundra is not engaging

Hello All.
I've been a long time lurker. I love seeing all the mods that everyone makes to their Tundras. Recently, my engine has started making a strange noise shortly after startup. The dealership tells me everything checks out ($125 well spent). It doesn't make this noise after its warmed up well. The idle is higher at start, 1500rpms-ish. Then drops down to 800-ish. When this happens and I change gears, I get a really strange sound. Its at the 10s mark in the clip. The belts seem to be in alignment, and the pulleys turn freely. I would appreciate any ideas

I don't hear anything at 10s. At 8-9 there is a weird, brief, acceleration. Don't know what that is. At 11s-12s there is a groan. If the 11s sound is your concern, that is your air injection pump cycling off. Lot's of threads you can search and read. The reason you don't hear it when warm is the pump only operates when the engine/catalytic converters are cold. If pushes extra air into the cats to help them eat the unburned hydrocarbons from a cold start. Mine has been making that sound since i bought it 5k miles ago.

 

Sounded like someone clearing their throat at 11.

What I can tell you is its normal for the engine to be on high idle and the engine is loud. Til it warms up.

 

Are you speaking of the kinda air Release sound I was just talking to someone about my 08 track doing the same exact thing .

ok, this is the insight I was hoping for. Truck guys AND StarWars nerds. My kind of people. It is the noise at 11s not 10. At a higher video volume you can hear it more clearly. everything else in the video I find normal. sounds loud because I had my phone sitting on the engine.
@remington351, if it is a air injection pump, would it cycle on off multiple times? Sometimes I get this noise in the first 10min or so of driving when I come to a stop and just prior to acceleration from a stop. again, when its warm, it doesn't happen.

 

I'm not an expert on the air pump. I recommend you do a search and read the threads others have contributed here to gain a better understanding. To my knowledge it shouldn't cycle on/off. The pump is controlled by the ecm to only come on when the cat temperature is too low. The additional air stream improves cat efficiency, air is clean, democrats and the population of California are made happy. The rest of us could probably care less. The first 10 minutes? I think the circuit is designed to operate in the first 60 seconds only. Others with more advanced knowledge will need to chime in to help you out.

Just curious about the idle, I have seen different idle revs on multiple Tundra trucks. My 2000 rested around the 600 mark, my 2001 around 400 and my 2005 around 650'ish

 

In park the 02’ idles at 1100 (warm up) and drops to 700 (upon warming). Sits at 700 in Park warm.

In ‘D’, she rests at 500 with the foot on the brake at a full stop.
