Looking to purchase used gen3 Tundra. Advice needed

I have been looking for a truck for over a month and a half now. I test drove all of the different models, and found I liked the Tundra the most. It was a 2017 1794 edition Tundra. But since the dealer (who bought from a Canadian auction) was unable to wiggle on price in the slightest I decided to broaden my search.

Last week I drove 4 hours to test drive (and if all went well) purchase a platinum for 34k + tax. I was leary of some things, like the lack of history on the vehicle and the wobble the vehicle had. It had 46k miles on it.

I am going to drive an hour away to look at another platinum this week. It's at a Ford dealer, and doesn't come with an extended warranty. I will obviously look to make sure the Cam Tower Leak has been addressed, but since the powertain warranty is still available I have some time to get that fixed.

Should I stick to CPO, or is used ok? My price range is 2016 - $35-36k, or 2017 - sub $40k. I do like the platinum/1794 features, but I am willing to drop to the Limited Trim. Just looking to see if you all have some guidance.

 

Keep in mind...If the vehicle is less than 3yr/36000 miles jennifer taylor can assist you with a extended factory toyota warranty. She works at wolverine toyota. I love my platinum. Mine was cpo. The rear sway bar and bilstein 6112/5100 made the ride way better imo. I would definitely want to see records of vehicle history. Mine checked out for me and i love my truck. Btw if you are thinking platinum/1794... I would stick with those trims. I knew i wanted a platinum, and i am glad i did. Wish you the best on your search!

 

I am not far from that area actually. So thanks for the tip on the extended warranty! The listing an hour away has already sold, so no go on that one. Back to square one on my search.

I found out that the chrome rims are plastic coated chrome and get curb rash easy. I had a vibration in the front that went away after I bought new tires. I knew it would be tires or brakes. Some dealers swap wheels with other trucks.

 

What is this "cam tower leak" and what years do they appear on? Have they been addressed on the 2018-2019 models and is it covered by warranty? Also, is the extended warranty from Jennifer Taylor here on the boards a lot cheaper than the dealer?

Any concerns purchasing a low milage 2017 (still under bumper to bumper) that was originally sold in Canada? I might be putting an offer on one tomorrow. It isn't a CPO vehicle, and it's not sold from a Toyota dealer. It's actually at a lexus dealer nearby.

 

I would check it out. Check the cam tower, and look at the vehicle history. Contact jennifer and give her the vin #. A vehicle inspection would be wise too.

you may be right, but that is not what she told me. wouldn't surprise me though. I will ask the service manager if he can see the platinum extended warranty in the system the next time I go in for service.

 

Thank you all for your help. You have been fantastic in my search for a truck. I have been looking for about 2 months now. My '98 223k mile Grand Cherokee keeps on chugging. I regretfully didn't end up going the route of the Tundra. This was the truck I wanted. The sunroof, and roll down window were fantastic features. The price point just didn't work out in my favor, especially at my current salary. I have dealt with 5-6 toyota dealerships now. 70% of them were great to talk to and were as helpful as possible, but the one I went to today had the most rude people. I ended up purchasing a competitor truck, even though I really wanted a Tundra my bank account just wasn't big enough at this point in time. 2 of the trucks I found in the area (I drove 4 hours to Indy, and 1.5 hours to Cleveland) both had significant wobble and I got out of the trucks with a headache (platinum, and 1794). I live in Toledo, right at the heart of the big 3. I know I could purchase new suspension in the Tundra to help with the floaty feeling, but I wouldn't be able to do that right away. I almost bought an old Tundra and revamped everything about the interior.

I wish I could say I purchased one today. I will be in a Tundra down the road. In a few years if everything works out, I will buy my forever truck in the Toyota. Again, thank you all for your help. This community has been amazing.

 

Are you sure about this?...I bought my extended warranty locally because they matched an out of state price, but I bought the extended Toyota Care til 75K miles out of state and it's loaded in their system and I've been using that fine w/o any problems. Maybe the warranty rules are different than Toyota Care?

 

I was told that the Toyota Care would work in any state at any toyota dealer. So I wonder if he bought 3rd party extended care, or the official Toyota care? That's my best guess.

 

Could be. I bought the extended Toyota Care at a discounted price from a Toytoa dealer in KS. Been using it here in Phoenix (30K / 35K service) without any problems. I have an appointment tomorrow for the 40K service. My dealer here shows it's in their system and I'm good to 75K. I was however told when I bought it that the out of state dealers can not solicit sales out of state, but if we reached out to them they are in fact allowed to sell.
