4Wheel Parts quoted me around $900 to install Bilstein's on the front. Does that sound high? The shocks are only $200.

Can anyone in the DFW area let me know what they have paid and provide and recommendations for a shop to do the install?

For that kind of money, you can buy yourself some very nice tools and do it yourself.

Beware of 4Wheel parts. The one in San Marcos, CA ripped me off. Lied about parts and charged me for work that was never done. I discovered after the fact when I decided to change parts and go a different route with my previous truck. When I discovered it was too late to do anything. (This post is my little payback to them.)

good point but it isn't lack of tools or desire to do it myself that is preventing me from doing it, it is fear of screwing it up. I have zero experience when it comes to this type of project and don't to screw it up and have it end up costing me more to get my mistake fixed.

Had a shop that services our fleet vehicles do mine for around $550 labor only. This included:

Installing 5100 shocks on all four corners (used factory coils on front).

    Installing add-a-leafs on rear.

    Alignment.

Probably too far for you, but Total Car Care by Hwy 287 in Waxahachie quoted me $200 to install 6112s up front. I decided to do it myself, though.

Hall’s Tire Shop off Pleasant Run in Lancaster charged me $20 for me to use their spring compressor cage to assemble my 6112s. I didn’t ask how much they charge to install them, though, but their labor quotes have always been reasonable when I’ve used them in the past.

Waaaay high, and four wheel parts charges you for EVERYTHING. One quote I got from them included something stupid like "lubricant = $5.72". Maybe not exact, but it was that much nickel and diming.

I'm having my buddy who owns a Goodyear shop due my tires/rims/Bilstein 6112 and 5160's with shackles for like $350. He was straight up and said "the rears will be easy, and maybe take 30 mins but the front may take a little bit but it won't be more than $350 total".

I was quoted $400 to do the fronts. I ended up doing it myself and it wasn’t too complicated. You will definitely need a second person and some decent leverage though.

Should have said Walton's Total Car Care. Sorry about that.

I agree with installing it yourself if you're mechanically inclined. I did mine by myself in my apartment parking lot. A second person definitely helps, but the only person available at the time was my 5 year old son, whose too young to really do much except to bang the hammer on concrete and lose a socket or two in the process. Just take your time if going solo.

There's a thread on here with tips and lessons-learned for those wanting to do it yourself. What helped me a lot were some youtube videos. A second person can help move the hub out of the way while you manhandle the new heavy coilovers in. That was the only time I wish I had someone helping out. Instead, I had to use my knee to move it out of the way and struggled with my weakling, skinny arm to snake that heavy thing in one-handed while maneuvering the top hat into place with my other weak hand. So if I can do that, anyone can.

The lower control arm nuts/bolts were on there real tight. I had to use a thick, long breaker bar and a metal tube (from the jack handle) over it to lengthen everything so that I had enough leverage to break them loose. So it also helps to have good tools at your disposal (I had to make a few runs to Harbor Freight to get a few more tools in the process using my wife's car).

Probably the most frustrating part was connecting the lower control arm and balljoint/hub assembly during reinstall. They just won't line up and connect with regular manpower. Some folks use ratcheting straps to mash them together, but I couldn't figure out how to do that. I used an extra floor jack on the bottom and a long, thick flathead screwdriver to help realign the two bolts together to finally reassemble. (Two or more floor jacks really helps.) The other frustrating part was reconnecting the sway bar links. It helps to loosen or remove the sway bay from the frame in doing that process and to finish up when the truck is lowered back on all fours.

The youtube videos make the whole process look easy. For the most part it is, but the tricky parts I mentioned above can take a bit more time and thought.

Either way, post pics when you get it all installed!

Is there a decent place to buy the Bilstein 6120/5160s in DFW, or should I just find the cheapest place online?
