The fact the last one completed was 173 and we are ~625 is crazy.

Just my two cents, and I apologize if this has already been mentioned.

I'm totally intrigued with the roof top camper idea, but I keep coming back to the same thoughts.

I think I would rather put my stuff on the roof of my truck and sleep in the shell, rather than the other way around.

Also, a roof top tent takes stealth camping out of the picture.

More than a few times I've slept places where I would rather not let people know I was in the back of my truck sleeping. I also think it would be really awkward setting up a RTT in a truck stop for example.

Then there is the matter of trees. I search out trees to park under for shade, or sometimes I just have no choice but to park under a tree, and I don't think in some of those locations you could set up a RTT.

A camper shell is definitely plain vanilla, but it seems to offer the most options.

Being retired on a fixed income sometimes makes for strange bed-fellows.

It isn't so much that I want to camp in a truck stop, but sometimes it is the only reasonable option when it is really late at night and you just can't drive any further.

Surprisingly, showers in a truck stop are extremely nice, nicer than the ones in a lot of cheap hotels, and when you wake up in a truck stop there is fresh coffee and breakfast options.

Trust me, it isn't my first choice, or even my second or third choice, but it is an option and it fills a need.

    I wish I could!

Been there, had that set-up. I had a shell, decked drawers, and a Frontrunner rack on top. First there probably isn't enough room on top of a shell to keep everything you'd want on a trip. If there is you have to worry about it being secured properly. It's not the easiest thing to constantly get stuff off and put stuff on a shell 6' in the air. You'd also have a way bigger center of gravity impact than you would want if you off-road. Lastly when you want to sleep (on the platform you'd need to build, or air bed you'd need to pump up), if you have things in the shell you have to take them out or at least make enough room to set up the bed for the night.

The GFC also allows you to put 500lbs on the roof if you choose, and they specifically address the fact that in a pinch with the top down you can stealth camp inside just like a normal camper shell.

Have you had a chance to se a GFC in person? I am wondering how secure their access covers are. My original plan was to get a Diamondback cover because it's beefy and secure, and a rack with an RTT, but am focused on upgrading suspension so either configurations on hold at the moment.

I have. We found out this morning I actually know the same guy that @sdde4n is referencing above. Not quite sure what you mean by access covers. If you mean the doors, they are all key-locked, so nobody can just open it up. Would they hold up to someone with a 4' prybar? No idea. I don't know if a Diamondback or anything similar would either.

This thing has been making its rounds around the Internet. He’s got an IG account and I poked around and asked him some questions. Apparently it’s a TAV built truck. If he paid retail, it’s like $45k plus for long travel front suspension, mediocre rear suspension and fenders/bedsides. Ridiculous. I’m def in the wrong business.

I’m scheduled to go look at a GFC in Louisville and see if I want to commit the cash.

He’s running sua and a TC shock relocation with 12” bypasses and bumps in the rear. Bout as close to full LT without cutting the bed u can get. I wouldn’t say mediocre

And it’s supercharged. Sad thing is it’ll probably never get wheeled hard

Interesting. Didnt know this. He said TAV kit and it lists a smooth body for the rear for that $45k, so I made an assumption.

Sorry oh mighty one. I’ll never 2nd guess your all-knowingness again.....

I’ve looked at these and am going with AToverland summit.
The GFC is lighter (I think) but the build quality on the AT and access to the tent is better from inside. Plus you don’t have to wait a year.
Add a goose gear set and a nice fridge and call it done.

I will have an 2005 AT Horizon trailer fully equipped for sale soon if anyone is interested, at a reasonable price for a Horizon.
