The CarPlay adapter does charge your phone but not at a fast rate, I would say it keeps it at a constant charge level (percent).

You would need the HU, canbus wiring harness for Toyota vehicles, and the CarPlay adapter.

See spreadsheet for links. You don’t need the mounting kit since you already have one I assumed. You also don’t need the GPS adapters. You will need items 1-3 on the list.

Wow! Very helpful. Thank you very much!

I think your install and pictures have swayed me. I am scrapping the Sony install mainly because a 7" screen just looks too tiny on our giant dash. It's roughly $150 more to go this route.

Hopefully there isn't too much of a difference (electric-wise) between 2nd gen and 3rd gen.

I think installation should be the same for 2nd gen. One thing I woud like to point out, when in reverse, the music is paused. I haven’t figured out how to get the music playing while in reverse. Also, I haven’t figured out a way for anytime reverse cam yet, but I do not need this feature. Others might.

I read that so many people have issues with the Tesla HU which is why I went with the Dasaita HU

Honestly with A) (2) kids under 5 around and (B) needing to hear instructions from the wife when backing in the RV, I welcome this "option"

    Sorry, one more question.

The Canbus harness essentially adapts your factory harness into the head unit correct? No need for splicing/crimping?

Can you tell if it is a multi-year universal harness? I would imagine that stereo wiring wasn't all that much updated (if at all) from 2nd gen to 3rd gen. Just worried my harness might not plug up.

Also, was your truck a factory JBL equipped truck?

The canbus wiring harness is the PNP harness. No splicing needed. I’m sure it will work for gen 2 but you should message dasaita to confirm when you order. You can send them a photo of the back of your head unit, I used a photo I found online. My truck was non JBL but the harness is JBL compatible per description.

The canbus harness is universal for most Toyota vehicles, not specific to Tundra

Did you have to use the mounting brackets off the OEM radio or the ones that came with the new HU?

Use the mounting brackets from the Metra mounting kit.

Let us know if how it goes! I have to sell my Sony XAV-AX5000 before dropping coin, but I’m interested to see how fast they get it here. Did you get Apple CarPlay?

Maybe I’ll be the first 2nd gen guy to do it.

I live in California so maybe that was why it only took 3 days, but a lot of reviews on AliExpress said that shipping was very fast for them too. Keep us updated with your install once you get it.

Yeah I did get the carplay dongle too. I am hoping that one day someone makes a wireless carplay dongle. I hate cables...

I did the wireless charger mod in my truck and it doesn't work that well. But I got on board with a indigogo project for a really cool wireless charger that should actually be here in a couple of weeks. And I think it will work well since it can charge through 1.57" of granite.

@916tundra Since this started as an audio thread... Audio question.

Could you have not installed the tweeters in the factory location in the dash? I know you'd have to run a cable or maybe you could relocate the crossover to under the passenger seat and use the factory wiring? Assuming it home runs back there.

Thoughts? Since you basically dissembled your entire interior.

Yes you can install the front tweeters at the dash if you are willing to do the following:
    1) make or buy adapters/mounting brackets for the new tweeters. The factory tweeters are larger.
    2) run the wires to the crossovers or figure out the wiring from factory and splice into it.

Hope that makes sense. I chose to put the tweeters on the sail panels since that’s the shortest run

Understandable. What did you do for the rear doors? Did the tweeters fit in the factory location there?

@jmevis Another advantage of having the tweeters on the sail panels is that the tweeters are pointed towards you. The factory dash tweeters are point up to the windshield. Not sure if it makes a big difference

The rear tweeters fit perfectly for me, no modifications needed. It depends on the size of your new tweeters. I did use some hot glue. I know some use zip tie

Probably at the same focal speakers and subs since they are an amazing price and a really high quality speaker.

But might go a different route with the amp. Maybe a JL VX1000/i5 (Its 4x100watt & 1x600watt) the dsp you can do with them is insane. Its super pricey but I'm sure its really nice. You can use the JL audio knob with it for a physical dial to turn/subwoofer mix. And there is a blue tooth module you can buy for dsp control... I'm sure the new HU could download the app and control/monitor the amp processing. I'm not sold on it but i'm really liking it. I'm also concerned it might be a little under powered. Those Taco tunes amps put out some serious heat.

I LOVE good loud clear music, I'm a 30 year old drummer and live sound engineer so my music taste is broad. I want to feel & hear sub drops, bass lines, and live drums. Not trying to compete with the set up, I just want a bangin' system that sounds good af when I turn it up.

Ha your's is nice! I'm not gonna go as far as you did with the sound deading, i'll prob do the doors and back wall. And I don't really know if that amp is worth it. The HU is supposed to have DSP built in. So the Taco Tunes amps might be fantastic! Ill make those choices when the time comes.

You still loving the HU? I'm getting an ETA for Monday 4/15!

@916tundra HU question. Can it have multiple Bluetooth connections at once? I am wanting to get an OBD2 reader. But I don't know if it could read the gauges and play music from my phone at the same time with 2 blutooth connections. Maybe I should get a USB OBD2 reader and use one of the spare ports?

I am very happy with the HU. I am mainly using CarPlay and that’s all I need. Haven’t even mess with other stuff yet (movies, games, etc). The HU also sounds great.

As for the JL amps, you can do two amps, 100x4 and the mono 1000. Should be cheaper .

I think the tesla guys had to do a wifi OBD2 adapter. However on the Aliexpress website they spec a blutooth OBD2 unit.
