How hard was it to do the bumpers? More thin layer? Does it stick more of the light lenses?

That is my next plastidip project

 

On a larger area like the bumpers, I keep the mess down and tape it off with blue tape, and news paper for over spray. Tape right over fog lights.
Anything steel or aluminum I clean with Denatured Alcohol first. 409 on plastic.
Since the fog light surrounds are chrome plated, I just use 409 to be safe.
Start with super light coats so you can see 50% of surface, then 25%, the a medium coat and get heavier.
Always at least 7 coats.

I wonder how well the door handles will hold up to it.

 

Door handles will be the first to go. Wheels and other pieces will last for years. If done with the proper prep and application. Wear and tear on handles won’t last long imo. But the beauty of plastic dip is peel off the handles and do it again. Project complete again.

 

I take them right off and get both sides.
I have had very little problems with all of the Plasti Dip that I have done, but the door handles are definitely a problem area of not done right.
(I had done my 2010 Crew Max the same way and kept it in there for about 6 years, with minimal retouches.

 

I take the door handles right off and get the back of them. They last for a long time if you are aware of it.

Yes, just Matte Black. No glossifier or metalizer.
I have used the glossifier in the past and didn’t feel as though it held up as well as the regular Matte Black. It seemed to have lost its sheen.

 

Good to know then. Figured they would not last. I either get them painted or find covers. Did the covers with my previous Gm truck. eBay stuff. My tundra has the plastic handles so no need. Guys with chrome handles can do the plasti dip then.

 

This was my 2010 that I did the same on and lasted for many years.
Occasional also retouches in certain areas.
Beauty is, if you apply right, you can just peel it off and redo that piece!

 

What do you use to clean them and do you put anything on them to make them shine?

 

Every time I see the title of this thread come up I can't help but follow it up with "I put that shit on everything!"

I did lots of parts on my snowmobile, ATV, and random other things!!!

 

The only thing I clean them with is car wash soap that I get at local auto shop.
The shine just happens when they are clean. Even as they dry, they do keep an almost “satin” finish.
I do take it through the car wash, but typically only use the touch free, but prefer to wash it myself and use a soft brush on an extension pole.

 

Just did mine this past weekend and I'm loving the look (the chrome was giving me shingles). I think I may have to redo it though. I only did 3 coats but I'm seeing ppl doing many more than that. I may pull those pieces back off and do a few more coats this wknd. :/

 

Definitely do more coats. The more you spray the longer it lasts and easier it peels off when you want it to. You'd have a heck of a time getting that off with only 3 coats.

I always do at least 7 coats, often more on parts that may get abused!
Real problem is that if you don’t do enough coats, it won’t peel off cleanly.
It should come off in one big sheet, not having to scrape little sections!

Thanks both for the advice. Yeah, i'll get it done this coming Friday. Hopefully the next 4 or so layers bond to the last one!

In all honesty, it just has to last me long enough for me to get a TRD pro setup or something similar.

looks good! I am not a huge fan of chrome, but your before pic actually looked super nice too. The chrome with cement is perfect.
