I panicked and just bought a 2019 TRD sport, because I know that more than likely TOYOTA is going to screw this up just like they did in 2010 when they took the V8 option away from the 4runner. TOYOTA is not in the business of listening to their consumers because if that were the case we’d have all the sweet land cruisers and Prados with snorkels and turbo diesels that the rest of the world gets. Nope we get HYBRIDS AND ELECTRIC CARS because instead of going on adventures and combating 18 Foot tall spiders in the outback were sitting in bumper to bumper traffic on the 405 freeway.

Well, at least you made a quality panic buy purchase. I owned a 4Runner from 2010, the first year of the Gen 5 without the available V8, and it wasn't a fast truck, but it was a damn nice one. If you really wanted to see how Toyota screws things up, I'd refer you to the Gen 3 Tacoma. So while I'm very interested to see what Toyota comes up with for the new Tundra, I share your cynicism that it might not necessarily be the change many of us were looking for.

I had a 2011 trail as well as a 2005 SR5. Then later had a 100 series with the 4.7 v8 and adored it. I never owned A 4runner with the V8 but that motor in that smaller platform would be outstanding. I really wish they would bring it back. I bet if they put that 4.6 V8 in the 4runer from the tundra/Lexus sales would be nuts! I agree that the 2016 tacoma redesign motor is complete garbage. You know what sucks even more is that the 4runner is getting that same engine

you thinking from a perspective of a person going "wow a v8 in a 4runner, we need that!" most people buying a 4Runner aren't going to care, they want to know the mileage. Case in point, I had a 2006 Nissan Pathfinder with the ridiculously well built VQ40 engine. 250K miles and never even burnt a drop of oil. In 2008 Nissan added the 5.6L engine from the Titan as an option, and in 2008 they sold less than HALF the number of pathfinders as in 2006. so adding the V8 did nothing to increase sales.

    Yeah but that’s a Nissan v8 not a TOYOTA v8;)

Also aV8 is more suited for off road driving because a V8 delivers torque low in the RPM range instead of at the end like a V6. So when you’re on the trail and going slow you have the torque when you need it. Same goes for the diesels.

Right there with you. Had an 04 Titan that I loved. Then I was ready to trade it in on the redesign, but they brought out a Ford F150 wannabee. It was horrible. So here I am with a 2015 Tundra.

I just read on Google that toyota is going to have the tundra and the Tacoma on the same platform. It is supposed to be easier to build for the Texas plant so they can build both trucks at the same facility. I hope this is wrong! I really don't want to see a streched Tacoma called a tundra.

I’m pretty sure the 5.7 is going to be gone. Going to have a V6 like the raptor

I was told the 5.7L is staying. The 4.6L is probably going to be replaced with a different option.

Upgrading the engine for more towing capability won't mean anything unless they also upgrade the frame and suspension.

Toyota pioneered the process of building multiple vehicles with different platforms in the same plant in the same assembly line at the same time. They don't even batch them as they run through. They determine how many they need to produce of each configuration and then create a pattern that spreads production out evenly throughout the day. (e.g. 3 Camrys, 1 Avalon, 2 Siennas, repeat)

Before that everyone built straight runs of the same vehicle in the same configuration.

Unless the article expicitly says they will share the same platform I wouldn't worry about it too much.

So just because they're built on the same assembly line doesn't necessarily mean that the Tacoma and Tundra will share the same platform.

Also, for a body-on-frame vehicle sharing a platform just means that the shape of the frame and electrical/brake line/exhaust routing are the same for both vehicles.

That's how it has been for the Titan (full-size) and Frontier (mid-size) for several years. Although the shape of the frame is the same, the metal on the Titan frame is thicker than the metal on the Frontier frame.

What Tundra owner wants 1/2 of a Tacoma?
This seems like it will be detrimental to Tundra owners, but Tacoma owners are going to be ultra happy if this is true. They will finally have a big boy truck!!
Anyway, hopeful that it is NOt true.
I hope you read all of this negativity about your proclaimed change Toyota, because no flipping way I am downgrading....

Excellent point about Toyota not listening to their customers. This type of thing ticks me off! And I don’t want to have to change brands!! But I will if I am forced to buy a glorified Tacoma later on. F that.

I read the shared platform today as well and am also not very excited. Both trucks are built for 2 different purposes, hope we don't get the same 3.5 lol.

    Ummm. Stuff
But honestly they probably are listening to customers, just not the right ones to us. Out of the thousands of tundras on the road we are the few. I see it all the time on the Facebook tundra groups that people get out of cars and into the tundra because it is the cool thing to do at the moment. But they also want to bring all of their car features with them. They don't care about towing, hauling or off-road. There was honestly one guy appalled that there were scratches INSIDE of the bed and he didn't know how anyone could treat a vehicle this way. The real truck user's opinions are getting pushed to the side because of people like this and it has been happening for years in every brand. It sucks but that is what we have to deal with.

X2, and its also what's driving the pickup truck costs up and out of reach from most people who actually use trucks. The large luxury sedan isn't cool any more so those people have overtaken the truck market.

Exactly. The maintenance and repairs that need to be done at the dealers along with shitty reliability of luxury brands is driving them to “luxury” trucks.

    Curse you Perry the Platypus!
Just look at the competition to see what they will do. Toyota knows that no V8 will kill the market share that they have scratched and clawed to gain. Give a high performance turbo V6 option and maybe a diesel since everyone else offers it now. The next Tundra is going to be tech fancy whether we want it to be or not. Hopefully the quality, reliability, and longevity is still there!
