Horse trailer haul question!

Hiyeeee back and owning a 2019 crewmax TRD, LOVE THIS TRUCK SO MUCH. We've had a brutal winter up North and it has been an absolute pleasure to drive.

So I am shopping for horse trailers rn and looking at a little gooseneck vs a bumper pull. GN preferable for my own personal space and horse ride is better.

Issue is the gn weights in at 8350 GVWR...and specs on my truck say max tow weight 9,800....meaning my horse can't ride in the trailer. Unless I am reading something wrong....can someone help me out and confirm or deny before I pass on this super little gn trailer?

I hear sooooo many people say "this trailer is fine with a 1/2 ton" but I also see sooooo many people pulling a ridiculous load.

 

GVWR is the max weight of the trailer and the load (not just the trailer ). so, you should be good with the 8350 GVWR on your truck. however, you could easily run out of payload (1500-1600 pounds) with the trailer tongue weight, people in the truck, any gear, etc.

 

looking for a horse trailer as we speak. How many horses? Slant or straight load?

Going with a 1/2 ton, 2 horses, tack, grass etc etc. Find an aluminum, Goose-neck is great, but they are heavy by design.

You want to find empty weight of the trailer, then add your horse etc etc. GVWr shows what it's capable of, not what you actually will be towing. If you're hauling a Friesian or two, get a 3/4 ton.

 

Looking at both straight and slant, this particular gn is slant. 2 horses, would get a 3 horse slant with the right everything else.

The ref Colorado TJ provided are super helpful and I'm doing the spreadsheet of weights rn

 

Interesting side note as I've been calling around to see about gn install prices....the new Tundras don't have the capacity to have a drop down hitch and some people don't even do them bc apparently it's gotten much harder to do aftermarket gn?

 

Probably going to be pushing the limit as to what's comfortable for regular and recurring towing. Definitely give yourself some buffer between max ratings and what you're actually towing. Tongue or hitch weight is a huge part of the equation.

I ended up getting a bumper pull, about 3k unloaded so well, well, well within tow limits on the truck. Pulled it back from Texas and it's a dream!

 

Nice, just did the same. found a 10 year old 2 horse slant that had a horse in it 2 times.

 

Sweet! Mine is also older with very, very limited use. Tack room looks more used then the horse box and my guess is someone kept in a shed and used it as a tack room. I got a two-horse slant by Elite.

 

Not squatting too bad. Is that empty? May need a WDH once you put a load in the trailer if it is empty...?

 

Yeah, it's empty. The Tundra normally is 100% level. We won't use it for this trailer though, we have an 18 Sequoia TRD sport that will be primary horse duty. I hitched that unit up yesterday and that thing only squatted an inch.

WDH is on order though for sure. I'm a firm believer in them and the sway control is even better.

Side note, comparing the Stock Sequoia and the Tundra with 35's towing is an eye opener, the 35's absolutely KILL usability, but it looks cool so that's what matters. 4.88's will be coming soon

it's all steel. Empty is 3400. Luckily both horses will be right under 2K lbs total.

 

I just bought a 2 horse slant 14ft Jamco with a gvwr of 10,400 lbs Each axle is rated for 5200 lbs. A very solid aluminum (including frame) horse trailer. It actually weighs more than my 13ft steel Moritz. Just wanted to say that steel is not always heavier than aluminum. A well built trailer like Jamco's doesn't just have aluminum structures covered with a skin of aluminum. Those would not last long where I go. The Jamco has tongue and groove aluminum planks instead. It comes in around 3600 lbs empty with a tongue weight of 600 lbs. Once I add a horse or two and tack, the tongue weight will go up considerably. Mine has the axles in the back just like the one pictured here. Since I had it custom built I had the option to move the axles ahead one foot but found that it could be a problem if I am hauling my horse in the last stall and hay in the first stall. That is how I go horse camping. So I kept the axles in the sland load position. You'll find that straight load trailers have the axles one foot ahead and they are easier on tongue weight. But I wanted a slant load because it is way more versatile. My 2015 SR5 double cab also has a cap on the back by ARE which I use for sleeping. Add my camping equipment and it starts to have to work hard. I use a weight distribution hitch so that the truck is as level as it is when unhitched. Combined axle capacity is 8,157 lbs. GCWR is 16,000 lbs. Of course the salesman and the brochures boasted that it can haul 10,000 lbs but watch out for that tongue weight. For my model a tongue weight of 9-11% of the trailer weight is the maximum allowed. With those horse trailer axles all the way in the back you really need to watch that tongue weight. I will be needing to go to a scale to find out mine. There is a trick with a bathroom scale that a dealer suggested I try......but I need that scale for my WW program!

 

It isn't so much that the empty weight of a horse trailer is an issue - it is the tongue weight. My empty 2 horse slant load with dressing room trailer weighs just under 4,000 lbs empty but has an empty tongue weight of 795 lbs. I used scale weights, not manufacturer's weights. Trailer manufacturer declared a tongue weight of 600 lbs for my trailer. You really have to watch payload capacity with a Tundra. Mine has 1450 lbs. Even with a weight distribution hitch (required if hitch weight is over 500 lbs) I only have 655 lbs left for passengers and camping stuff in the pickup bed.
