@TundraTex I am looking to purchase a FRAC in the next six months to go with an upgrade I am planning. I attached an image to give you the visual, but what I want to do is hook up aux cameras to tow mirrors with relays to provide power. I would use a time delayed off relay so that when I turn my left turn signal on the relay will stay open for 20 seconds after it stops detecting voltage. Same for the right. Depending on the position of the toggle switch, the mirror view should be displayed automatically. Right now I am trying to figure out what to do if I put my hazards on. I need a way to shunt the voltage to ground when that happens. If you know please don't tell me yet. I am actually having fun playing with this idea and seeing what all I can remember.


So I guess my question is, would this work after I figure out the hazards situation?

Follow up question would be, has anyone found a way for the front camera to turn on automatically when going less than 5 MPH?

@Ynot_tonY your concept will work. I won't spill the beans, but here is a helpful hint. Consider the wiring for power and video signals separately. You can't have one without the other. Enjoy!

There is a way to do this as well, however you'd need a switch to select this mode and to turn it off. When video is displayed on the Head Unit, all other menu functions are disabled. You can't change radio stations, adjust volume, make phone calls thru the HU, etc... So if you were stopped at a red-light or in stop and go rush hour traffic, you wouldn't have HU access unless the 5MPH switch was off. And since you need a switch to turn it off and on, why not just use the Front camera switch when you want front video to begin with? That's why this feature is not a part of the FRAC Harness.

 

I did not think about the stop and go traffic. That makes a lot of sense. I will scratch that idea and concentrate on finalizing my thoughts so I can start mocking it all up. Ill be reaching out to you sooner or later for purchase.

 

I’m having TSS issues now that my front camera is in the TRD Pro Grille too. I contacted Jomax....since my TSS is relocated with their bracket in my case the camera is blocking the TSS sensor....so I think you may just need to find a new location for your camera that is not near the sensor.

 

So I think I need a new camera location. You can see in the first pic my camera is in front of my TSS sensor.....and my sensor thinks it’s dirty and malfunctions! So the second pic is the camera I’m thinking of getting an outing to the plastic under the license plate holder. Anyone know if this location will have descent view? I need to get the camera out of the sensors view

 

Looks like a good alternate location. Especially with the camera mount you are looking at. You should be able to adjust the installation angle to give a nice view ahead. Your existing camera wiring will most likely be compatible with your new Camera. So the installation won’t be very difficult and you can try a few temporary locations to see what you like best, before a permanent installation.

 

I installed the new camera today. I was able to reuse the rca into the cab, but required the rest because the new camera had different connectors. The install came out great....but the picture has some noise (wavy horizontal lines) with the engine on and off. Not sure how to fix that. Any ideas @TundraTex? I still need to test drive and see if this new location fixes my TSS problem.

 

The first thing I would check is the ground connection for your camera. Make sure you’re connected to a solid ground as close to the camera as possible.

Other than that, recheck that all your video line connections are clean and securely connected.

Video noise is usually “inductively coupled”. That’s fancy talk for poor shielding or ground. One of the other potential causes of inductive noise is coiling the power wires. Where possible, you should trim your power wires to the minimum straight path length required. “Looping” the slack wire can create an antenna of sorts that picks up inductive noise. For cases that you have to loop the slack like for the long video/power cable that goes into the cab, you should put the slack loop as far away from the engine compartment as possible. You might not be able to get rid of all the noise, but the further from the potential interference, the better.

You mentioned that this still happens if the engine is off. Is the interference the same or does it decrease when the engine is off? If it’s the same, you may have a defective camera. Not much you can do for that other than return it for a new one.

Yes, the same on or off. But I do have tons of zip tied loops! Thank you for this input, I will check all connections and shorten lengths to see if that helps.

 

Mystery solved! Something in my garage.....lights, fridge something was making the lines. I backed out of the garage and it cleared up.....pulled in again and they got stronger. Doh! Now the new problem is the camera wiring is junk. All connections are soldered and secure....but the picture goes in/out. I’m going to return it. Also, something to keep in mind, this camera is a 210 degree view and it almost seems waaaaaay to ride of an angle compared to my last camera.

 

I wonder if you could use your original camera in the new spot by making a small mounting bracket out of aluminum angle to give you the right mounting orientation.

 

I had the same exact problem. Camera was bad. Replaced it and everything worked great.

I installed mine the same was as Bluebottle and I have the NSV switch panel as well. The covers don't interfere at all.
I keep my NSV switch covers down unless I'm actively using the features to prevent accidental activation. Strobe, and Swipe are always off light bar is always on as it is activated with brights. I honestly use the FRAC more than I do the NSV. I put the toggle for Front and Rear camera on the left and VIM on the right since I use that one the least. You've probably already found your own solution but if you want a photo let me know.

 

Nope, but I want to put 4 altogether including backup cam. Has anyone goten any feedback from this????

 

Not sure what your question is. Are you wanting to view four camera feeds on your truck?

Run camera ground to the truck chassis. Run camera power to the FRAC harness power lead, and route camera video (RCA) to the open Front Cam RCA jack on the FRAC circuit.

 

anyone find a front camera that's held on with double sided adhesive!!

 

I don’t know of anyone using double-sided adhesive tape. I wonder how secure it would be after exposure to the elements.

Check out some of the previous posts in this thread such as this one. Most guys are making an “L” bracket to attach the vertically mounted cameras to the grills if there is not enough space to drill a hole in the crossmembers directly.
