Anyone use an exhaust silencer?

I know a lot of guys like loud exhausts, but I like mine quiet. Getting old I guess and starting to appreciate creature comforts :).

I recently picked up a 2018 CrewMax and am finding the exhaust a little too loud for my liking. Especially around 1500rpm, I get this very deep drone that fills the cabin and just isn't fun to listen to.

I came across this exhaust tip insert on Amazon:
    https://www.amazon.com/Adjustable-S...r&qid=1554164673&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1

Does anyone have any experience with something like this?

I know you could get resonators like the helmholtz resonator, but I am curious about the above silencer. Doesn't require much to install.

    Thanks.

No, but I need to build one with a police radar detection to activate when they're around.

    Million dollar idea there :spy:

You might want to get the @dirtydeeds resonator to help with the drone. I don’t know if it helps with stock exhaust drone

Do you have the TRD dual exhaust or stock single? I have the stock single with reg filter and it doesnt get any quieter than that.

There is always going to be some exhaust noise. You are not driving an electric veh. The more lifted you go, the more db you will hear. Exhaust notes aside, you do not want to mess with how your veh performs by restricting it. Turn on some tunes.

You could go the expensive route and have the interior floor doors and back wall insulated with something like Dynamat

Wondering if OP has TRD or other exhaust. The stock is about as quiet as it gets.

A buddy of mine used it on his Mustang GT a while back and it probably knocked off about 30% of the loudness. But, he was using aftermarket Flowmaster exhaust. And his neighbor’s HOA didn’t like the loud mufflers. It kept getting loose, and he would always have to tighten it up every few weeks or so. Finally, one of them fell off, so he decided to take the Flowmasters off and went with Magnaflow.

In my opinion, the silencers made his Mustang sounded like a lawnmower on steroids. I guess that his HOA were used to hearing the sounds of lawnmowers because they didn’t complain about the sound then. Ha ha ha.

Do you have the single stock exhaust, or TRD duals?

Either way, I would get a resonator from Keith at Dirty Deeds.

I have the single stock exhaust.

Overall, I suppose it's not that bad and much quieter than the Nissan Titan I used to drive.
If I could at least reduce the deep drone at 1500rpm I'd be happy.

    Not nearly enough room here!
Call Keith, 1-760-877-4234, ask him about his Resonator. He'll build you one and include instructions for install. Any Drone you hear now WILL disappear!

Man I can't stand HOAs. Get in your business and complain about everything. They wouldn't complain if your friend had a Prius. How do they have any pull over the type of sound a car makes?

Stock single exhaust sure is pretty quiet to me. I was cruising next to a Rock Warrior yesterday with dual exhaust and it was loud. It drown out my truck noise and music rather quickly. Sounded bad ass though.
The loudest factory exhaust systems I have heard lately has been on the Ford 6.2L in my F250 work truck.

OP please chime in on your decision and how satisfied you are. My :ballchain: has hinted the same a few times, particularly since the OEM audio doesn't seem to help drown the drone. Awaiting our first long road trip, before considering @dirtydeeds solution. Also in a HOA but don't really gas about them since issue not in the CCRs and speed limit way too low to get up any rpms, my main interest (happy wife happy life) barring any other impact on performance. TIA all.

I agree. My friend lives in a very nice gated community. But, it comes at very high cost to freedom and privacy. They even tried to tell homeowners there, that they can’t park certain types of vehicles in their yard. He has a lifted F250 which is lifted approximately 12” and they said that it’s not allowed because it is a commercial or none standard vehicle. He had to appeal the fine that they gave him. He would have moved, but his wife loves the neighborhood. :).

They told him that his car had an aftermarket exhaust, so it’s not allowed because it was too loud. :)

He thought about doing so and have actually consulted with an attorney about it. But, changed his mind, given all the costs and headaches associated with the process. So, he did some research and found applicable state laws that governs those types of things. He then wrote them a long threatening letter and attached the state laws to it. They ended up giving him a waiver for his lifted truck and said that his Mustang’s new exhaust was now in compliance and acceptable dbs.

I would have certainly taken them to court if it were me. But, I’m glad that he got the issues resolved.

I know what he’s talking about with the stock exhaust drone. I’m surprised it’s there, but these newer tundras don’t have a resonator like the older 5.7 trucks

    Thought I'd provide an update.
I couldn't get my hands on a used pre-2014 muffler in decent shape. And didn't want to spend $ on a new one for just an experiment.

I gave Keith at dirtydeeds a call and got a resonator shipped over. Keith is a great guy and provides great service.

Long story short, the resonator works really well. That annoying 1500rpm drone seems all but gone.

    Thanks everyone for chiming in.
