Coasting in Neutral question

    FYI, I'm not a mechanic and don't play one on tv. I have been coasting in neutral to red lights and putting it in neutral while waiting for red lights to turn green. There has been a pretty good bump in MPG. I'm thinking that in neutral there is no load on the engine which is increasing the MPG. My concern is whether or not this could eventually cause harm to the tranny? I know my brake wear will increase but, my last Tundra I had for 10 years, I only changed the front pads twice, rears...never, they hold up well. I'm going to experiment on my next full tank of gas and will post my findings.

    My driveway is about a quarter mile long and almost all downhill when leaving the house. I coast down in neutral when leaving the house but I don't do it to save gas. I do it because the engine is still in its warm-up period where it's running a little fast, and I don't need the engine pushing me down the hill. Out on the public roads, I never do it. It won't save you gas.

    Now at long red lights, I have done it. I don't know if it's saving me gas or not, but sitting there at a light sometimes you can tell the engine is under load. Pop it into neutral and it will no longer sound that way. I figure doing that now and then can't hurt.

    Try down-shifting the transmission to slow down, that cuts fuel entirely.

    That's what I do. I'd never use neutral. Never even occurred to me to ever do it.

    I found significantly increased fuel economy when I stopped obeying red lights and stop signs. Plus I reach my destination faster.

    I would have some concerns over the wear on the converter and the shock load from going neutral to drive when the light becomes green, if not at a stop.

    If I remember my old driver handbook correctly, it's against the law to coast your vehicle in neutral in Texas. But that law was probably written back in the day of Model As, REAL four on the floor, and flathead four under the hood too. :D

    When I got my Tundra, I found that rules of the road were more "suggestions" to me. Plus my tires do say "Dick" on them (I have Dick Cepek tires), so my wife says it fits my new driving style... :benchpress:

    Many Texans don't even know that the tail bone of the Rockies (Franklin Mountains) is in far west Texas. You can coast quite a few miles coming off the peak on Woodrow Bean Transmountain Road. Plus, there's enough hills near me to make my Tundra dither about what gear it wants to select. :D

    one time I filled mine up drove it home and parked it for a week while I was away for work. so far that's yielded the highest mpg,

    If you are severe clear I guess it doesn't hurt, however if you need to perform an evasive maneuver you may just find yourself in neutral and having to add shifting to the situation.

    My wife's Insight automatically applies the electric PB every time the car comes to a complete stop. It's a great feature for stop lights at the top of hills. She loves it. Something else to want on the next Tundra generation. :D

    I’ll pop it in ‘N’ when stopped at a long light. RPM goes up from 550 up to 700 on the shift from ‘D’ to ‘N’ (at a dead stop).

    RPM’s go up 150, but the strain on the transmission goes down.

    Shifting on a coast is not worth it around here.
