Unsprung weight difference?

    Im plotting about my next set of tires. Some context:

    My current wheel/tire setup is 275/65r18 Cooper Discoverers (40ish lbs) and TRD off-road wheels. My standard commute is about 7mi/day with a lot of stoplights and I’m averaging about 11-12mi/gal per the ecu calc.

    I want to step up to 295/70r18s, and I’m looking at either the 116s Terra Grapplers or the LT Wildpeak. The Wildpeaks would save me about $350 on the set of 5, but are literally 20lbs heavier per tire than the Nittos, and 30lbs heavier than my current setup.

    I don’t do any serious off-roading; just ranch stuff while shooting pigs here and there, and I don’t tow anything, so I don’t rwally feel like I need the LT capacity for any reason. In the grand scheme of things $350 isn’t a huge deal, but it would pay for the RB10s I want.

    Is the extra weight going to kill performance? Should I suck it up and buy the Nittos?

    Check out some other tires in a 295. The Falkens are nice, but those are definitely on the heavier side for the tires. Cooper just came out with their XLT that is lighter, or look at the 285/70/18 Ridge Grapplers (only 59 lbs).

    To answer your question, the added weight definitely will impact the truck performance, but if you don't drive very far then I wouldn't worry about it.

    From my shopping on 35s, Falkens were the heaviest tire. They have some nice features, but at a price in weight.

    The only downside to Coopers line of AT3, is they are not 3 ply sidewall. Whether that's a bug deal to your or not, not sure.

    Thanks for the tip on the Coopers. Probably going to go that direction; looks like they last forever.

    My truck doesn’t do a lot of actual work, so the sidewall doesn’t matter hugely to me. Looks like the Cooper AT3s buy me some load capacity with minimal weight gain. I’m probably over-thinking things, but that’s how I do. Thanks for the input.

    Greetings, I would get the Nitto p295/70/18. I have experience with both the Nitto G2 and falken at3w in the p285/70/17 size. In my opinion you will really like the Nittos. The falkens provide better optics but the G2 looks great too while also giving you better on road performance. The at3w tread is pretty aggressive and is a fine tire but only if used lightly on the road. it weighs more and the tread has high rolling resistance because it wants to grab the pavement and will definitely suck power. Example: when the at3w first came out, I was like hot damn I want that tire. At that time I was running the G2 and decided to make the switch(I get bored:D)
    My initial thought was these look awesome but I could feel the power loss immediately. Mind you both tires were the p285/70/17. I’m a highly sensitive person and I was already thinking about regearing when I was running just the Nittos but after I slapped on the falkens I wanted to drive straight to the diff shop. This was my experience on my 02 Tundra 4.7. Yes, your truck has a ton more power but I have a feeling the loss would still be significant. I really hope this helps:thumbsup:
