So I know going to the 5.29 gearing can return a truck with 37s back to stock performance. What is the worst case if a regearing isn't done right away beside less performance and worse MPG? Can it hurt the truck by not changing the gears right away? Considering an 8" lift with 37s, but trying to see if a gear change can wait a little or I need to wait until I can afford to do it all at once.

I’m sure plenty do it. If you take it easy and choose the right gear out on the highway for your speed you should be OK. What you don’t want is the transmission hunting for gears constantly. It is generally harder on everything lugging those big tires around. Gears always help that. I say go for the lift and the tires you want and see how it feels.

I do think you should plan on eventually re-gearing. 4.88 or 5.29, choose your poison LOL

I ran 4.30 gears for a year without moving to 4.88’s with my 37’s. You should be fine

Thanks man. I think long term I would do 5.29, but I hear the price of install can get crazy, so $3K plus for gearing while spending over $5K for a lift, wheels and tires is just a tad too rich right now. Well it is all too rich right now, but hey WTH....

You'll be fine, loss of mpg is about it. There are plenty of tundras running 37s with out regearing. Few actually beat them off road too! My plans soon on 3"

When I put the 37’s on my truck. It was crazy noticeable of change. I couldn’t imagine 40’s. But everyone is different

This is also kinda like when people think I'm crazy on stock gears with 6" lift and 35s pulling my 30' camper but I live in a flat part of this country but even going to Tennessee it was fine. I also am like you I dont drive my truck to much maybe 5 to 8k miles a yr

Hey JSena, did you go with Nitro gears or another company? I'm moving up to a 7"BDS and 37"s and not in a hurry to re-gear but it sounds like most people that have done it noticed a big difference with gear searching and performance.

What did you regear to deebub? 4.88 or 5.29?

Also running the 40s on stock 4.30... like @Jsena said, definitely wont be winning any races, but truck seems to be fine. I drive majority highway miles, so its pretty easy to keep the RPMS down once you find a sweet spot, I tend to keep it under or right at 1800rpms on the hwy. I don't really tow anything so the only power I need is turning the wheels. Biggest thing for me is that I need to get my speedo recalibrated cause there is about 10-12mph difference at cruising speeds lol but I ran the 37s no problem on stock 4.30s.

BUT for what its worth, I do plan on regearing for the longevity of the truck, just not a priority at the moment.

I’m sensing some sarcasm but there was a very well known member who ran 40’s with stock gears and a supercharger. I mean, I think regearing is appropriate but I’m not instafamous so my opinion doesn’t count.

I'm highlighting your use of wording. Supercharge it and run 40’s...followed by "no big deal". That setup will run at least $10K, which for most people is a big deal lol

I think it'll make a big difference on what part of the US you're driving. Where I live, many of our highways are through the mountains and I would hate not having regeared for 37's. Stock gearing and 35's, at times I'd be in 3rd gear on the highway climbing hills. Driving on flats I don't think it'd be much of an issue, curious of the mpg though.

My 4.88's are Yukon front, Nitro rear. I was told they're the same company.

Me, too. I've had 37s for a year now on a 7" BDS lift with stock 4.30 gears. No issues at all. No hunting for gears. Nothing. Slight acceleration loss, yes, but it's heavier now w/ the bigger tires/wheels/lift. But...beast mode makes up for it as far as I'm concerned.

I'd agree. "Beast Mode" really is a noticable improvement while rolling 37's w/stock gears. Higher taching shifts FTW. While I save.

You mind me asking why you're looking at 5.29 gearing over possibly 4.88 gearing? I was reading on it a bit when I considered 8" and 37's(opted to 6" and 35s) and if you're towing often, I've read the suggestions of going 5.29. If you're doing mostly driving without towing, 4.88 will do well and keep your RPM's in a good spot. Just from researched I've done, but doesn't mean it's right or that I'm right.

My buddy regeared his tundra on 35’s to 4.88
And im sitting on 35’s with the 4.30 gears, very small difference, now going to 37’s is another story.

4.30 stockers to 4.88 is negligible...stock to 5.29 is different story
