I have a 1997 Toyota T100 4 x 4 Extended Cab truck (automatic) and ever since I got it (8k ago) it has had a knock (sounds like someone taps the firewall with their knuckle) when I hit a small bump going down the road, the sound on the drivers side sounds like it is coming from somewhere around the steering column and on the passenger side it sounds like it is coming from somewhere behind the glove box. Both sides don't do it at the same time. It did it before and after I installed new shocks and I can't find anything loose (with suspension drooping or on the ground), all bolts are tight, no panels are intact under the hood and under the dash Hopefully someone will recognize this as something they had a problem with or knew someone that did.

New inner and outer bearings, seals all the tie rod ends tight, new steering stabilizer, inner and outer axle nuts torqued to spec and rechecked 500 miles later, new sway bar bushings and end links. It did it before rebuilding the front end and after. It seems like it is coming somewhere near the firewall.

I know all the u joints are good and tight as well as the steering shaft, hoses all seem to be tight and not flopping around but the muffler tubes, now that is something I might have to check on.

When u press gas pedal does the noise go faster if so,i've had a knock that started as a tapping noise and as time went by it got louder and louder so while examining under the hood i wouldnt have guessed if i didnt see it sticking out on by my belt which to my knowledge shouldnt be there so i poked it and it moved, clueless of what it was i googled the part as image and come to find out it was...... Check your hydraulic tensonor,it broke off, nothing else should be knocking but your valves and piston which all points to your motors going to blow, you can still save it if its the tensonor, check a little above by bottom pulley in middle, its held in by two skrews, hope this solves your riddle because alot of people and mechanic wouldnt think of it and 8 out of 10 will not find it telling you theres nothing they can do

Dont check muffler pipes because you heard it from both sides,it dont make sense unless its your headers making the noise

Is the gasket in the firewall where the steering linkage passes through still intact?

It's not a lifter or any motor noise, it is coming from behind the glove box area. It doesn't do it constantly just sometimes when I go across an uneven area such as a driveway to the street if it isn't the same level as the street. I have traced it down to the cross brace that runs from one side to the other behind the dash or the front bracket of the passenger side Nerf Bar but I'm betting it is the dash brace as I believe it was making that noise before I put on the Nerf Bars. I may take my welder and tack the washers and nuts to the dash bar and bracket and see if that stops it.

Does this happen only when you're going fast, like on the highway? And when you slow down it goes away

@se3388 sound anything like this??? Sounds like coming from glove box area, but more by dash pillar area, only at highway speeds
