Chrome chrome go away

Here's the front of my truck. I want the chrome gone and to be black. Preferably flat black. Anyone out there do this to their ride? Any help would be great. Don't want to break the bank. LineX, paint etc....give me some ideas

 

I'm doing Line-x but then my truck is black so it blends better.

I'm going all black and blue with my ride so that's right up my alley. What'd did it cost to get that done? Or did you do it yourself

 

I removed mine and plastidipped it. Just recently i decided to add a silver flake to it and it turned out awesome!!! Its held up over a year and ive wheelee my truck and been all over snow and mud. Cost me 24 bucks!

The dust and dirt on it doesnt do it justice.

 

How hard is it to do that?

 

That was for someone to do it or did you do it yourself and that's what the product costs were?

 

Did it myself and it was easy. Just took the grill off by the 2 clips that hold it on the bottom, took off the plastics under the headlights and washed them. Layed out a sheet and had 4 cans of dip. About 2 hours later (having to wait 10 minutes between each spray) i was slapping it back on.

 

Does it run at all?

I did mine with plastidip as well. There are lots of you tube videos that will help you do a good job with plastidip!

now you need to do the Toyota emblem.

 

Plasti is easy to apply. Downside is it doesnt last long, difficult to keep clean, and doesnt withstand bugs, rocks etc from normal driving. I had plasti dip for about a year but decided to remove it and paint mine. Using color match paint, high automotive grade clear coat and primer. Its very easy actually. Im not a professional painter at all. In fact, I just paint Retrofit Headlights. Got a paint gun from habor freight and the results....not 100% factory but close enough no one can tell. Painted, Tow mirrors, Bumper end caps, hood buldge, plastic front bottom bumper, rear bumpers. Total cost was about $300 give or take.

you did a great job did you sand any of the parts before paint?

 

Yes sir! First I removed the chrome with Easy Off Oven cleaner. Then started sanding with 400 grit, and then 800 grit. On the plasti bumper, i need to sand it a little with 800 grit because of some scuff marks.

Could you run me through the process start to finish? Im pretty blind to the whole process. Painting I mean not plasti-dip

 

Sure bud. You'll be very surprised at how easy this is and long it lasts. You might have to do a touchup in a year but aside from that it lasts. Ill go through a detailed description of all the steps (which are minimal) when i get to my work comp in about a hour or so.

@Dustydirt19 My bad brother, I thought this posted a while back but it mist have not gotten through. I'm writing it up again. Sorry about that.

 

So i started off with removing my front grille and cleaning it pretty well. I'm fairly rough on trucks so this was more of a task than actually spraying it. I'm going from memory so bare with me. Once cleaned up, I took off the upper half of the grille that is attached to the hood. I cleaned that bad boy and set both on a sheet inside the garage (door open of course). I had 6 cans of plasti-dip from Home Depot and only went through 3, which was awesome because I used the others for random stuff and my badges (which came out awesome also.) I soaked 3 cans in warm to hot water and shook them up pretty vigorously prior to spraying. Spray a little on the sheet to make sure you have good spray coverage and no spattering. put one coat on both and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes. The outcome of the first coat will make the grille look really smokey. DONT GO HEAVY. This is a gradual process so you want to be patient with the coats. Do this about 4 or 5 times, or until your gut says that it is thick enough. Let it dry for about an hour and slap it back on. DO NOT WASH for about 3 days then you are safe to take it through a car wash or whatever you'd like. I went a little different and bought the metalizer flakes and it looks pretty badass. The flakes gave the matte a gritty coat and I've driven many thousand miles and have yet to have a bug get splattered! Not sure the science behind that but the bugs just don't stick. I also drive 1 1/2 hours one way in order to get to work which is in the middle of the desert and we have some bugs! I have had the same coat on for over a year and it still looks like i just put it on. I also wash my truck atleast once a month. I also put about 6inches from the bottom along my whole truck, the same coat minus the metalizer and this has proven great for shielding rock chips and brush scratches. If i could be, I'd be a damn spokes person for plasti-dip because it's never failed me and i literally spent less than 35 bucks on all of it. If you have "hard" water, after a few washes it will seem as if it is fading, but that's just residue. Give it a nice scrub and it comes right off. It's a very very simple process. Just make sure there is no wind and dust when you do it, YOU WILL REGRET IT.
