916tundra Audio System Build

Hey Guys,

New member here with my first truck, 2017 Tundra Crewmax SR5. I really like the truck; however, the stock sound system is subpar. It gets loud but the sound quality is not there. All my vehicles have premium sound so I'm used to the sound quality. This thread is to document my build and progress. This won't be a step by step instructional write up since @Netmonkey did a great detailed write up already. Stay tuned for the build and feel free to ask any questions. This forum has been very helpful so I would like to contribute.

Audio System I am going with:
********* 2 amps kit with PNP harness.
Sub box - Q Power Dual 10" Ported
Subwoofers - Two 10" FOCAL P25FS
Component Speakers - Two sets of FOCAL PS165FX

Progress as of 9PM 3/28/19: got the subwoofers wired and mounted and started to tear down the interior. I will be doing a full interior sound deadening including doors, floor, back panel, and roof.

 

What head unit are you going with?

 

I was looking at getting a tundra crewmax and was wondering if it was deep enough under the seats to add subs and an amp? great looking build you have there, will be watching to see how it comes along and what you think of the sound.

 

I’m sticking with factory head unit for now until I decide which is the best option for aftermarket.

The Tesla style android head unit is cool but too many bugs and issues.

There is room under the back seats for amps but not enough room for subs. Subs have to go behind the seats.
You have to cut out the foam to make room for the amps.

Progress update, 2:40pm 3/29/19.
The interior is fully gutted and ready for sound deadening.




********* amps kit and harnesses also came in. The amps are small so I’m questioning the RMS rating, but we will see.

 

Idk about ********* sometimes. Those amps look so tiny and weak. They have never divulged the actual manufacturer of their amps or speakers which makes me leary of them. And they arent cheap as far as pricing goes. I hope they kick ass and sound great for you, you're putting in a lot of time, money, effort, and some very expensive speakers. Getting shorted on possibly the most important component of the audio system would really suck.
Nice job on the interior gutting, you've got some big balls. What are you using for sound deadening? Doing multiple layers and some mass loaded vinyl? Foam? Seems like most guys just use dynamat or similar without realizing what materials truly kill road noise and which ones just dampen vibrations and rattles

 

Thanks! I hear ya. If I’m not satisfied with the amps I will send them to either meade916 or Williston Audio Labs to have them dyno to get the true RMS rating. If they are not what ********* claim to be, I’ll make sure the forums know to stay away from *********; however, @Netmonkey is satisfied with his ********* 1b system. The only reason why I went with ********* because it’s somewhat plug and play. I could have bought separate amps and use the harness and wire it myself, but I didn’t. I will say even though the ********* amps are small they do feel dense. But we will see.

@Netmonkey How are the ********* amps and Image Dynamics speakers and subwoofers holding up?

 

I used the noico 80mil and I liked it

Check out sound deadener showdown.com they have a ton of great info and ideas on there. I highly recommend adding closed cell foam and mass loaded vinyl. That's what really kills the road noise and quiets the cab down.

You wanna add both CCF and MLV when you install it. You need the foam as a decoupling layer aka padding and air gap for MLV. And foam itself doesnt do much.

I got MLV(1lb/sqft) on ebay and closed cell foam on Amazon, any brand will work. I just went with the best deal.
I would try to use CCF and MLV on the floor, and back wall, the doors if you can. It won't work on the roof, too heavy. For the roof use the noico and maybe some self adhesive material, I forgot what it's called but @1UPPER used some on his roof and that's what I'd use or similar.

The headliner has some material that looks like polyfill so I think the Noico sound deadener is good enough for the roof

 

I used Dynamat Extreme for the first layer on my roof then I installed 1/2” layer of Dynaliner. It’s a lot quieter and cooler in the cab.

 

@Pudge I think I will add the CCF and MLV at a later time since I’m trying to finish the install this weekend and the materials won’t be here on time.

 

It can definitely be done in stages. Gives you time to find some good deals and also make a plan.

 

Yes that's the stuff. Dynaliner is what I was trying to think of and will use on my roof if I ever get to it

 

Progress update, 7:40pm 3/29/19
Sound deadener is installed on the roof and the headliner is back up. I will not take the headliner down again. It was very time consuming and the 3 ceiling grab handles were very difficult to take off. The caps were on so tight that you have to use brute force to pry them out. Most of the caps are damaged so I will be buying new parts for replacement. Good thing they are cheap parts.

@916tundra I didn't even think about taking off that back panel.

Are you doing 100% coverage? It's gonna sound so much better even with 25-40% coverage!

 

I will cover as much as I can, probably 80%.

 

That sounds good. This time next year I'll be doing MLV and CCF to the floor and other spots.

 

Sound deadened the back side of the back window cover plate. I think it looks cleaner on the back side. Calling it a night. To be continued.
