My 'to-read' stack is no longer empty...

The Personal MBA (on my second read), Great introduction to business and a great resource if, like me, you don't feel like shelling out tens of thousands for a piece of paper that no longer means anything in the real world

    The Secret Lives of Color
I spend lots of time studying art, color theory and design. This was a random find while wandering around the Boulder Bookstore the other day. It's one of the best you'll ever go into. Historical building that used to be a brothel. 3 floors of fun and original hardwood. Reading this in tandem with Personal MBA.

Artemis Sophomore novel from Andy Weir who wrote The Martian. Really looking forward to this. The Martian was one of the best sci-fi novels I had read in recent memory.

Avedon Biography of Richard Avedon. Looking forward to this as well.

Leonardo Da Vinci Biography of Leonardo by one of the best biographers in recent times, Walter Isaacson. I highly recommend all of his books but the standouts would be Franklin, Einstein and Steve Jobs.

currently reading 'land of the dawn lit mountains' by antonia bolingbroke-kent. i'm just over the halfway point and thoroughly enjoying her writing. she had done a few articles in overland journal in the past but this is the first book of hers i have read. she has a sense of humor and great insight but, with dillen in the hospital again, this passage has struck a chord...

"Despite the hardships, I felt life her to be the antithesis of our fast-paced, mechanized, materialistic, Western existences - a life that's become so driven by artificial wants. Life in Tashigong was real. It was about food, shelter, family, community, togetherness. It was about need, not greed. It was about living with nature, the seasons and the cycle of night and day. People produced their own naturally organic food, breathed pure mountain air, spent the majority of their time outside and were free from the tyranny of the sedentary screen-addicted lifestyles so many of us now lead. British children aged between five and sixteen spend an average of six and a half hours in front of screen, a number that has doubled in twenty years. The average American adult spends ninety-three percent of their lives in cars or buildings, while the average American child plays outdoors for only half an hour each week. But here no one spent their days sitting in cars and air-conditioned offices, working in pointless jobs to pay the mortgage and buy more stuff they didn't need. They weren't subjected to the same drip-feed of distressing news that filters through our media channels every day. They lived in multi-generational households, looked after their elders, brought up their children together. Theirs was an existence of genuine togetherness, not one lived through the distorting, distancing filters of emails and social media."

Did some audio books on the road, hope that counts.

"With the Old Breed", E. B. Sledge. (if I had read this when it came out I probably would have gone in the Marines instead of the USAF)

    "Lucky 666", Bob Dury

    Read these on road trips.

"Voices of the Pacific", Adam Makos

    "A Higher Call", Adam Makos

Reading "An Army at Dawn," Rick Atkinson

How Obama's book keeps coming up "Based on my selections" I'll never know.

48 Laws of Power. Didn't actually read it but instead listen to the whole audiobook. There's a lot of truth in there that I never realized.

Not usually my type of read but just finished, Neil Degrasse Tyson- Astrophysics for people in a hurry. Highly recommend. Really enjoyed how well he connected the universe with us, or us with the universe I should say.

Favorite read so far is "What every BODY is Saying" by Joe Navarro. Basically the book teaches you how to read other people's body language, why we do what we do when we do it kind of stuff. He also uses real life examples of real cases when he used to work for the FBI and how he was able to read the suspects body language to help with the case. Highly recommend.

    Been into classics lately.

About halfway through “Count of Monte Cristo”
Had to take a break, I was starting to talk in 1800’s proper English dialect LOL

Decided on reading “Last of the Mohicans” before finishing up “Count of MC”

About halfway through that also.....never realized it was a book! I remember very little from the Daniel Day Lewis movie. Had to get it when I saw it in the bookstore. Great read so far! What got me was the intro and “warning” to doe eyed ladies, nieve bachelors, and scholars on the perceived romance of the wild frontier being ruined, the horrors and brutality of the narrative keeping eyes awake at night and improving one’s perception into the historicity of years past, respectively.

    Just ordered these two:

    IMG_0575.jpg
Term Limits by Vince Flynn. The first book he published, ties into the Mitch Rapp series. Basic overview, three politicians are assassinated in one night in DC. A secret group of retired spec ops soldiers issue ultimatums for America's politicians to put aside partisanship and restore power to the people. Some of the details of this book are revealed in the Rapp series that follows, but really looking forward to reading it regardless.

    IMG_0574.jpg
Tribal Leadership by Dave Logan and others. A leadership book (obviously), about how to identify a business' culture, assess it and upgrade it.

“Sapiens” and the sequel are both good. Better angels of our nature is pretty dry if you’re not a stats person but otherwise is good. These are all history based which I enjoy.

This is a fun series. I listen on audible at work when I'm stuck at the desk. Sci-fi and business books are pretty much all that's on my phone. I listened to the Toyota way to lean leadership a few weeks ago. It was good. I wouldn't last a week there and I think I'm a pretty good manager.

I am toward the end of "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell. If you keep today's conversations on class and economics in mind and read Thomas Sowell's work and then turn around and analyze today's conversations on class and economics again you can easily get pretty depressed by how horribly wrong people are getting things.

Audiobooks (the only way I get through a day of work...):

    Finished:

The Right Side of History by Ben Shapiro. I liked it. Argue about the politics elsewhere. LOL.

    On the go:

Dances With Trout by John Gierach. If you're a fly fisher, you'll probably enjoy his writing.

12 Rules For Life by Jordan B Peterson. Great book and a gut check for life. I also have the hardcopy on my shelf.

    Hardcopy:

IFSTA Essentials of Firefighting 6th Edition. Currently doing my fire school theory online so this makes up about 90% of my reading time at home.

Lucky 666 by Bob Drury/Tom Clavin. Great WW2 story about bomber pilots in the Pacific.

Higher Call lead me to "Voices of the Pacific" also by Makos, which touches on a lot of Eugene Sledge wrote about in "With The Old Breed". Good thing I didn't read that book when it came out, I'd likely had joined the Marines instead of the USAF. I'm looking to read more about the 1st Marine Division now.
