Advice on a purchasing used tires / wheels

Im looking at set locally. I straight up asked what he was looking for and he said $1100. 50% tread left in my opinion. My thought are used tires like this are worth $300 and the rims with the extras used are $400. These were purchased in 2016. Your thoughts?

The description from the ad and a pic:

The tire in the pic looks to have more than 50%. The wheels are really the expensive part here, those are really nice and can't be found new for less than 250. The TPMS crap adds to the cost, I personally have never needed that. Maybe hit him with 850 and see what he says.

Agreed, the wheels are expensive and tough to find. Not a bad price compared to Rock Warrior wheel pricing. Tread looks pretty good, although not the Wranlger MTR with kevlar. With working TPMS sensors, I say reasonably priced.

To your point, start around $700 and set your limit at $900 because those are sweet wheels with plenty of tire tread. You can always sell your old wheels/tires and recoupe some of the ‘premium paid’ for upgrading.

Remove the tpms and sell those individually, as well.

 

If those were 5 lug gen 2/3 wheels I would be all over that.

 

How noisy will this tread be? To me, it looks like a combination between Mud and all terrain?

 

I would love to buy new. Seems every time I buy new, I break it, scratch it or wreck it! I've given up.

 

Look like AT Duratracs, have them on my truck. Not loud at all. Louder than the stock Michelins but they aren't bad

Agreed. I don't think they've been off long. He sold his tacoma and took these off. He's in the process of saving to buy a house.

 

They'll make a bit of noise. They're ice snow rated if that matters to you.

those will look great on a 1st gen. i say scoop 'em regardless and sell your old ones off to make up for it.

 

If the wheels are in good/great shape. Try to come together for $900. Oem wheels are not cheap, especially those. And you don’t see them everyday. Good luck.

 

Sigh, he's firm at $1100. Without TPMS he would do a $1k. Just seems too high for me.

 

That’s pretty in line for those wheels. New the wheels alone would probably run you $1200+ through the dealership. If you’re in love with them, I’d do it. If not, aftermarket wheels are always a cheaper option.

 

New wheels shipped I found for $991. New tires another $800, but then they are new. Maybe need new lugs? Hmmm.... all for a want! My wife would kill me! Shhhhh don't say anything!

 

Oh I hear you on that lol. Honestly, if the used ones are local and you can go look them over and see that the wheels don't have any deep scratches/rash and the tires don't look weathered at all, I'd go that route. Saving $700 to $800 and then can go to the tires you want in 15-20k when the tires are worn out is better flexibility to me.

 

I love Craigslist make-an-offer ads. Naturally you cant be stupid and offer $100 for the set, but I've had alot of success looking at the item in person and pulling out crisp $100 bills. In my experience the seller starts mentally spending the money and is more negotiable rather than over email, texts, snapchat or facebook.

 

3 hour trip from me. The best part about this is I can bring my floor jack and see how they look. If i don't like them I can bail.

Yeah been there too. Cash does make people more flexible.

Reminds of a CL story. I was selling a lawn mower for $300. Out of the blue this guys text me $200, no other questions. It was on CL for awhile so I said come get it. Then the questions, what's wrong with it, why you selling so cheap, blah, blah, blah. I was like all questions you should have asked before your offer. I refused to answer them, just told him to come get it. Then the name calling from him... Anyway, I blew him off top posted the next week and sold it for $250.

Your ribs (how much fo?) will get scratched anyways. Pull the trigger and sell whatever tires/wheels and make up a little bit. This is a great deal.

If you’ve been searching for a while, paying $100 or even $300 for something you really want is better than spending countless hours the next few months scouring online posts and sites in hopes of finding a set. 3 hours isn’t too bad either.

I have the same set that I would love to sell. I have 2 sets of TPMS sensors (Gen 2 and Gen 3 Tacoma) with lug nuts. $1100 is a steal! These tires were only used in summer months.
