Taller tire

Maybe a crazy idea but was thinking of ways to improve ride and had an idea that if I were to put a taller tire on truck I might improve ride a little bit . My tires are 265/65/ 17 yokohama's , I found some Michelin 245/75/17 for ninety something dollars . I already know Michelin has a good smooth ride and this size would increase the total height by around an inch and the sidewall by 1/2 inch which would be a bit more cushion and a tid bit less width. Need tires so might try this.

 

Those are some small tires for our size trucks.

 

I believe he’s talking about a first gen and yes that size would look a little strange on a current tundra

 

Is your truck stock or leveled?

 

Stock, btw it is a 2006 double cab and the 265's are the size that are suggested on door label .

 

That would take you from a 30.6 to a 31.5 inch tall. Also you'd go from 10.4 wide to 9.7 wide. I dont think it would hurt anything. Do it and get before/after pics and update on results.

 

You should be fine running that size. I would do a quick google image search and at least get an idea of how that size of tire would look on your 06 double cab.

 

You'll be fine, maybe a little rubbing at full lock.

Mine had 265/70/17 which are about the same height but wider on it when I bought it with no lift.

 

Why not just go a true +1 with a 265/70/17?

 

Yes, and I think the op would get a cushier ride going with 265/70/17. My dad has Goodyear SRA on his f-150 and those are some nice smooth riding tires. Here is an eBay link for the Goodyear’s in said size.

Thanks for all input , am still deciding on exact size , the size I mentioned was a marked down tire usually priced at $150 a pop and I can get for around $ 90.

 

At $90/tire for Michelins I'd run them. Only large diffference between them and the 265/70 is the 1" width which isn't a deal breaker IMO.

 

I'd go for it , especially Michelins at that price

 

I have ordered tires once on web from coker they were wide white walls for a 40 ford coupe I was building . Was kinda hard to get someone to mount them because I didnt buy from anyone locally and when I found someone to do it some jerk working at the tire shop got grease all over the white wall and it never came out, probably had some resentment .guess I can find someone or go to harbor freight and buy one of those manual tire mounting tools.

 

If you have a Walmart with the TLE still they'll do them no questions.

Nah , dont really want the tire changer went back and looked and the web site list several places that apparently agree to install their tires . I have a good tire dealer here in town , great older guy where I have been buying tires for everything I have including a class A motorhome but I feel kinda bad asking him .

 

I had my tires mounted by mills fleet farm. They’re a big box type store chain focused in the Midwest.

 

I looked back on the tirerack web site where I saw the tires and they give a list of local shops that has an agreement with them to mount, I called and confirmed that a shop in Lexington SC , about 18 miles away will mount them . So here goes.

 

Just placed order, $393.24 for all 4 tires .

 

That’s the cost of 1.5 of my tires!

 

That's a screaming deal. If I hadn't bought tires last summer I'd pick some up.

 

Hope they are ok and not some recapped blems, just kiddin , I'm sure they are fine.

 

Not 100% but I think those are the "old" style LTX which are great tires. I'm assuming they're just clearing out inventory.

 

It will be interesting to see mfg date on tires.

those are the tires I just took off my Tundra. Nice tires, but they've been replaced by the Defender line. I kept two of them because they were in good shape. Gonna be spares if one of my Kuhmos goes out.

 

You know, I forgot about that rebate. Btw, I sorta kinda confirmed or at least strengthened my theory of a taller narrower tire riding better. I saw an article somewhere on the web where the writer said that a taller sidewall and a narrower tread width would rice better because of a little more cushion ( more distance from road to rim) and less area contacting road because of narrower treadwidth ( actual contact to road. Adding to all of this that fact that these are Michelin tires that are rated strongly in the ride category, I hope to feel a difference . Funny thing is all my life I never really thought about the ride in a truck , I,ve drove everything , 18 wheeler ( Had CDL ) 40 ft diesel pusher class A motorhome, dump trucks, hot rods ......but as I get older I have changed my thoughts on this.

 

Tire rack has a reputation to uphold, you shouldn’t have any problems, unless the tires were manufactured in 2009 and they’ve been storing them in the Nevada desert
