Adding leather seats

I found using flat head cutting pliers easier, gave me more leverage to cut away the old rings.



Btw, you don’t necessarily need replacement hog rings. I used them but plastic cable ties work too. The goal is the same, to attach the rods together in the same place where they were with the cloth seats, although I found it pretty fast to hold the ring (it’s really a “U”) in the tool and pinch them in, in one shot all the same.

 

Already bought a set of hogring pliers with extra hogrings. I don't want to ever have to remove the skins once placed lol.

 

Is there really much difference from stock? The stock faux leather is already slightly padded and i don't find it unconfortable or ugly.

 

I used to notice a difference resting my arm between driving my stock truck and my wife’s Lexus. Now it’s about the same especially with the added padding. My stock one felt like cool hard plastic. I would say if you’re happy with what’s current, no need to change it. You can also sit in a higher trim like a 1794 and see if you care for it or not.

This looks GREAT, I never even thought about doing the center console. So basically all you did was pull it tight over the current vinyl and glue the edges down then put the plastic plate back on and that's it? seems simple enough, I may have to look into doing this and can tackle this and finally get to my steering wheel leather wrap as well.

 

Yes, that’s it. Maybe trim the cloth in some places as the plastic backing has short screws. Start at the “U”, add a very thin piece of foam in between like me to make it cushier.

 

you got a link to the foam you used? i saw you used some but you said not to thick to make sure it fits right?

 

I bought a laptop cover on Amazon and it was protected in a large piece of thin foam. I’m sure they sell that stuff at Michaels or one of the shipping places. Use anything that has memory foam type characteristics and template out just the shape of the top.

 

I have this cover and been contemplating the idea of installing it myself. Did you glue the foam to the original cover or did you glue the foam to the overlay? Any issues so far?

 

I didn’t glue the foam underneath at all in case I wanted to reverse the whole process in the future or replace any of it. It’s tight and can’t move. It’s also not an area that gets a lot of friction like a seat. I tend to think some fake leathers wear better than real and there is no discoloring or distress marks even though the driver’s side gets more use as an arm rest than passenger in my case.
