What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

In a different forum (for my commuter) there’s a thread called “questions that aren’t worth creating a thread for” that works really well.
Maybe something like this would work for us...

Washed the truck yesterday to get all the winter crap off. Just abiout cried looking at the state of my paint. I need to address that asap. Probably May long weekend. Oil change this coming weekend.

 

Yeah you've got some work to do there. You've got rust spots forming on the hood. The good news is that it's all fixable. If you follow those steps I posted 2 weeks ago you'll still cry, but it will be tears of joy. You definitely need Iron-X. Wish I could help. I enjoy this sort of thing.

That's mainly flat land. I drive a bit aggressively, usually shifts at 3500. Couple foot to floor moments. I'm just glad I only fill up about every 6 weeks.

 

I’d say first gens only.

 

Im going to order the stuff i need soon. Thinking my order of operations will go:

Wash with Dawn
Iron X
Wash with Mr. Pink
Touch up bare spots with paint
Clay bar?
Wax
Wash?

This will be my first time tackling anything like this.

 

Jerry, good job on that insulation . I have done several ole hot rods with that or similar stuff, was amazing how right after I installed it with car still just a hull , how much better it sounded when you closed a door.

 

Added some notes and suggestions. Be sure you do the 2 bucket method when washing. 1 rinse bucket with just water and 1 soapy water bucket. The general rule of thumb is to use the same company for all products. I like Chemical guys so the only outlier would be the Meguiars #7. You'll want to do this on a warm day which for you is probably anything above freezing .

This sounds like a lot, but if you do right and take your time your paint will be protected for a long time. After this you'll just want to wax twice a year.

 

Its AMAZING how most of the road noise is gone. The doors sound solid when you shut them, no more hollow can sound.

 

Think I'm gunna buy some sliders for a 2nd gen DCLB Tacoma next week. Found some on craigslist for $400. I know our trucks usually have 84 inch sliders, these are 82 inch, close enough. I just hope the legs are long enough. I guess I could always have Trail Toys cut em off and weld on ones that will work.

 

For that much why not buy from Stubbs brand new?

 

Good stuff, thanks! I think i'm going to use nanoskin mittt or sponge instead of the clay bar. As understand it, its the same thing with less hassle.

 

Tried to be a hero yesterday and pull off a super deluxe cabin filter addition. Bought a brand new STP engine filter and ruined the thing trying different methods of attack. My concept was proper, but tight tolerances and oddly shaped attachment points coupled with difficult access led to a fail.

I have 2 other ideas on how to make this thing work. Will post pics of success once the execution phase is completed.

 

What and pay another $100+ in shipping and then paint them when I can drive an hour to get these new and already finished? Ha

I'm in Texas bud, Tundra sliders aren't cheap here like they are in Cali. Now Tacoma sliders on the other hand...

It seemed like I overadjusted my LSPV because me rear brakes were coming on slightly too strong, so I adjusted it down.

And for the 2006 Access cab they require a Amp bypass harness because of the tweeters in the front doors so I called www.crutchfield.com told them what I needed and they were great to work with to get the job done.

I would spend $350 plus shipping in a heartbeat vs 400+ fab/tube/gas. Paint doesn't matter, if they get used that becomes maintenance anyway. Up to you, just throwing an option out.

I've been looking there too. But when I could just drive from South to North Houston and hold it in my hands the same day I pay for it...

 

One last question. Once I do this, how often will I have to polish, wax etc the paint? Once or twice a year or more regularly? I generally just wash twice a month or so April - October and then maybe two or three times over the winter just to get the road crap off.

 

I’d suggest your regular washings as you stated and try to do two waxings a year. For you, based on your winters, get a coat on in April and then before winter sets in do another coat in October.

The more waxing you do, the less restoration work you’ll incur in the future. The wax protects all the restoration work you’ll be doing.

 

I'll just add - looking at that rust on the hood, you want to get a coating of Fluid Film on the underneath the same times as those two waxings.

LOL - imagine a car show where all the cars/trucks were up on a lift, everyone's dirty laundry on display!

It's hard to say due to your road conditions up there. I think the key is to really take your time and do it right. If you can, do what they suggest and let the Meguair's soak into the paint overnight. That seemed to help mine. Also know that some panels may require multiple coats. I suspect that you will be able to get by with waxing twice a year after this.

I think that once you are done it's going to look like a different truck. Unrelated, but are you taking steps to protect the frame? Did yours get a new frame?

 

Mine didnt get a new frame, but its still in excellent condition. As far as I know, they use sand and gravel on the roads here in winter, not salt. Not alot of rusty vehicles around either way. I just wash the frame off every time I wash the truck. I've never bothered having it coated.
