Who's running a fridge/freezer setup for their camping/overlanding/expedition style trips?

Family of 4 here and we're more and more beginning to plan for 3 - 7 day long trips and I can see quickly wanting to move into a fridge/freezer setup and leaving the cooler behind.

Looking for brands to research out.

    thanks!

Dometic or ARB are the best IMO. But decide where you want to install it because the tops open different and check dimensions. I use an 85qt Wyntner because it's the only one that fits in the spot I have for a fridge and the top opens the way I want it to. My compressor died on it in 2ys but replaced with a Danfoss about 2yrs ago and still running good.

Running a Dometic CFX65W in my Four Wheel Camper. I love it.

It holds plenty of food and snacks while not consuming a crazy amount of power. They have a CFX75DZW and CFX95DZW which are Dual Zone and feature a freezer compartment. This is nice for ice cream and other frozen items the kids might want

Dometic makes the compressors for the ARB fridges. They are pretty much identical but the Dometic CFX series fridges see a slightly nicer unit.

I know ARB and Dometic use the Danfoss compressor - those are what you want as they use less power. The lids open differently so depending on what way you want it to open. I don't care for the ARB since the lids open long ways and not like a chest but it works for some that way depending on location

I recently scooped up a used ARB 63qt for $500, not sure what all you have done but having the fridge now means I get to upgrade to a group 31 battery also so keep that in mind also. Anyone have theirs mounted in the bed? Not sure I want to spend $300+ on a slide for it so looking for mounting options.

Ended up getting an ARB Element, along with the slider and wiring loom.
Going to mount into the bed and keep it removable when needed.

I have a Dometic fridge in the bed of the truck hooked up to a 150 watt solar panel mounted to the roof. And a 100amp hr battery mounted in the tool box. Works perfectly best investment ever.

I'm looking to add a dometic fridge/slider to the back of my rig. The fridge will only be used when we are camping, the truck is my daily driver. I have a switch pro with 2 open switches 35a and am wondering if I can wire this to the bed https://www.genesisoffroad.com/12vpoweroutlet-p/171-12v.htm
20a fuse through the switch pro. then plug 7.9a fridge in?

Less complicated explanation can I wire the 20a plug to the 35a switchpro to power the 7.5 a fridge with out blowing things up?

Eventually I want to add a second battery but that will be some time before that happens.

That would work but it would be better to run your own gage of wire. On my first set up used just the truck battery and ran the power to the bed. I think I used 8 gage wire because you lose voltage the farther you go. You’ll like the usb to charge stuff in the bed. I’ve gone Lithium ion Battery for my fridge battery with the solar panel since then. The battery is much lighter and the fridge doesn’t take much off the battery

Thanks for the advice and link. What type of lithium battery did you use? Did you build a portable battery box or mount it on vehicle? Thanks for your advice.

I used a battery box from Academy cut the holes for the usb and 12 volt cigarette socket to plug the fridge in. And I mounted the battery box with self tap screws and it’s strapped down with d rings.

I will be doing a fridge freezer for next year as well. Nuthouse engineering makes a sweet slide I saw at the overland rally the year. Just need to add a portable water heater to it and it got everything.

    Hi,
Does anyone has real experience with those? Because of Costco return policy I decided to buy it and so far I tested it at home. I'm not impressed. It is not showing the correct temperature and the compressor kicks in a lot. At ambient temperature around 75 it took 1 full day to freeze two small water bottles inside. When I turn it off temperature from 32 raises to 60 in matter of 1-1.5hr.

Since I'm planing to build my fridge/battery/solar set I would like to know how much does it take energy when running on 12V in hot conditions (85F-100F) Most interesting for me would be total amp or Watt consumed in 24hrs. Sticker shows 4.2Amp at 12V what is actually 2x what ARB or Dometic is consuming, however this is just a general number describing max momentarily consumption.

I got the Arb element. Its weather proof and can be in mounted in the bed uncovered.
Lots of great reviews. the stainless steel looks nice too.
@osidepunker has an Arb 83qt he uses
