People here are confusing octane # with fuel/ethanal #s....

Its funny when I see a "professional" make a comment thats absolutely made from a misunderstood point of view. For some reason he thinks or has been taught that octane rating equates to % of fuel/ethanol.

This is my understanding as well.

Technically, one could have ‘93 Octane’ levels in the crappiest gas (high ethanol) and you get crap.

Or, you could have ‘87 Octane’ in super high end (low ethanol) gas and you have no problem.

Another 85 octane mileage post. This was in town driving, just caught all the green lights.

Does anybody else routinely get 20 mpg plus? I feel these 13 mpg people must be riding hard. You need to drive these as you would a 1981 Buick Electra Estate Wagon. Same "light foot or else you spend too much on gas" way of thinking. The only difference is something actually happens when you juice the Tundra.:turtleride:

87 the truck run fine. The tailpipe get dirty the oil grt dirt quickly. 93 octaine slightly smoother but the difference is that the tail pipe stays super clean and my oil stays like new for 2500 miles then slowly starts to get honey color. With 87 after two taks oil starts to get dirty.

what is your tank average and overall average mpg? 13-14 mpg is what I get around town, on average, driving normally. 10 is what I get with a lead foot.

Depending on traffic, and my periodic leadfooting, I average between 16(sitting in traffic, what can I do?) to 20+(no traffic). If I hit bad delays, which is often, my numbers fall terribly. The speed I travel is between 35 and 55. The ground is very flat by Denver, so I can coax the engine to barely above idle speed for most commutes. 400 pounds in the bed make zero diff on mileage it seems.

Me too! But would the 87 octane ethanol free gas be better?

I use all 3 grades available in my area, and I spike it with Sea Foam from time to time.

I got 16.3 mpg on my last tank. I'm in rural Arizona. I imagine a trip to Phoenix will knock that way down.

When it's 10 to 15 cents more than 87 for 91 to 93 than I go with the higher octane. We have places out here that charge as much as 1.00 extra a gallon for high test and that is highway robbery imo.

My understanding is that 85 octane fuel is for higher altitudes. I grew up in Colorado and the low grade was 85, mid grade was 87 and high grade was 89. The reason all these grades are lower is because of the higher altitude. I no longer live in Colorado, I'm in Arkansas, and the grades are 87 low grade and 91 high grade. Many gas stations don't offer a mid grade but I think mid grade here is 89.

    Just my 2 cents...

The manual says 87, I’m curious why only 87. I’ve always used premium in full my vehicles? Any explanation?

91 Octane, I DAP tune my truck, runs better off 91. Every now and then I will put in Ethanol free gas. Really runs well off that stuff.

91 octane or higher is for high compression engines, aka hi performance engines. If you’re vehicle is does not have a high compression engine, it’s ineffective to put higher octane gas in it, that’s my understanding...

I realize I'm late to the party but... I wonder if injection should be the concern when octane is considered. The fact that Toyota was not a strictly direct injection engine (port or a combo is my understanding) made it another plus/selling point. Both my other vehicles (direct injection) recommend 91+ octane, but that didn't stop the valves in my car from becoming carbon clogged to the point of needed pulled and cleaned.

The service, which service dept. estimated cost was about $900, happened after about 100k miles. (Heard of it happening to other much sooner). How much more did I spend on premium gas to just have my valves clogged anyway!

I try to buy Costco gas as I hear it's cleaner, but forget paying more for gas when it doesn't recommend it. Even when I followed the manufacturer's rules I got hit with the inevitable repair. Nice doing business with you "peoples car"!

This is a great thread, I should have started reading it from the beginning instead of going to the last page and commenting. I am confused about something and if someone can explain it to me, it'd be much appreciated:

Why is E85 used in some hi performance engines? In other words, why is fuel with 85% Ethanol (isn't that what E85 is?) so great when regular gas with up to 10% ethanol kind of sucks? I have a flex fuel Tundra but the manual says my gas mileage will decrease on E85, but after reading some posts in this thread, will my truck have more power and run smoother, but just get slightly worse mileage on E85?

Some guys who have, basically, tuner race cars that are street legal, convert their hi performance cars to E85 instead of dumping costly, high octane racing fuel in the car. Why? Is this the same E85 that I can by at my local gas station for my Tundra, or am I misunderstanding something?

    Thanks for the knowledge

Is it methanol that people convert their high performance cars to, not E85?

So I just put E85 in my truck, and it does feel like it has more low end torque. The gas station I bought it at is selling E85 for $2.15 gallon, but on the pump, it says "70% ETHANOL" so it's really E70... anyhow, it may just be my mind playing tricks on me but the truck does feel like it has more pep...
