I was very sceptical about the fuel mileage increase claims made by folks who completed the charcoal filter delete on their tundras initially, but after looking at the process and seeing how easy it was to do, I figured I'd try it. And I'm glad I did. My mileage increased 1.9 mpg and it's been almost 2 weeks now. That's an extra 78 goals per tank. Very happy!

Cool. You have a specific thread you found out about this? What is its purpose to be there in the first place?

I’ve read up on this quite a bit and it seems the consensus for at least half the people that have done it is that it does squat. Nothing..Mine is going to stay. They engineered it in for a reason.

I wonder if this is the same kind of filter on my Tacoma. When I was getting my tundra tinted, the tint shop owner and I were talking about tacomas since I have one as well and he does too. He replaced this that I'm pointing to in the picture and had a very noticeable difference in gas mileage in his tacoma. He just replaced it with a fuel filter though which I'm sure is less restrictive than what was in there. I haven't replaced this in my Tacoma yet but I average 16.5 mpg (calculated).

The filter is there for when you shut your engine down. It filters any possible fumes from back flowing into the atmosphere. It wasn't intentionally engineered into the vehicles during the initial process, it was an EPA mandate.

You will occasionally smell those fumes once the filter is removed.

You might notice a difference if you have some mileage on your truck and the filter is restricting flow.

I pulled mine off my 18’ with only 1000 miles and noticed not a drop of difference good or bad.

Talking about the air filter correct? I wondered about that but when I asked about it here no one said much of anything. Its permanently glued in the air box and that alone makes me wonder about it but I figured if nobody's talking about just leave it be.

Gents, I did mine on a TRD CAI. Here are some definitive numbers and dynamometer tests from EE on YouTube. While it's not a Tundra, the results demonstrate the principle. There are improvements, yet minimal. Honestly, I was more concerned about it failing without the mesh gasket and that filter entering my intake manifold.

Accurate statements based on the results. Just wanted to provide some data because I was trying to research this for awhile. I have a spare lid to revert if I choose. I'm strange and did the CAI mostly for the looks.

2MPG from a charcoal filter delete? I doubt that. Improvement yes, not no 2mpg though

Too bad Toyota didn't go with this solution, like I said I went down a rabbit hole.

When the engine is shut off, there is a small amount of fuel vapor in the intake system. This prevents it from escaping into the atmosphere. As for economy, it’s simply not possible to make a difference. The throttle body position controls the amount of air entering into the engine. The incoming air amount is measured and the exact right amount of fuel is added. At full throttle with the filter removed, the engine would get a little more air and thus a little more fuel, and would make a little more power. At less than full throttle, it simply doesn’t matter.
I never get the same fuel economy from tank to tank, but driving a bit slower makes a huge difference in my fuel economy.

I remember deleting the muffler from my 1991 Honda Civic when I was a young kid. Before that time, I never gave it full throttle. After I removed the muffler, I was always giving it full throttle. I definitely noticed the extra power achieved by giving it more throttle. Ha Ha.
The point is, at anything less than wide open throttle, it just doesn’t matter. If you remove your main air filter and the charcoal filter, and your catalytic converters and mufflers, then when you used to need to give it 1/2 throttle for a given power, you may need to give it 3/8 throttle now. You’re controlling the restriction with your throttle. If you remove other restrictions, then you compensate by letting off the gas. And since we don’t tend to drive at full throttle, nothing we change matters. If you do tend to drive at wide open throttle for racing, hauling, or trying to accelerate faster than ideal, removing obstructions will generally increase power, and you’ll also use more fuel.

Engineering explained did back to back dynos with his Subaru Crosstrek before / after removing the charcoal filter and same with a k&n filter. His results were that you could get about 3% increased HP by EITHER removing the charcoal filter OR adding the k&n filter. Doing both gave some super minor .3% gain or something like that.

I've removed the charcoal on a few of our Toyotas but for some reason botched it on my Tundra. Normally it cleanly pops away from the box but on the Tundra it tore leaving threads at every glue point. Then I made it worse by trying different methods to get that off and ended up forking over too much money for another box top lol.

I got a K&N drop in filter, not because I want more HP, it’s just because I could wash it when ever I want.

I just wanted to hear the engine a bit more without going with an aftermarket intake.

I agree. At full throttle. Nobody measures horsepower at less. :)

I'm not sure you could measure horsepower reliably otherwise, unless you somehow limited the throttle position through tuning so that mashing it to the floor only gave X amount of % other than 100. Edit: And throttle position only controls the amount of power being requested from what’s available relative to the power curve after all variables have been accounted for by the computer. More power available = more given relative to the position of throttle and position in the curve. That’s a simplified way of saying it, I know there’s much more to it. I’m not a tuner but I had the first 9th gen Civic Si to be custom tuned and after 30+ maps and some playing around with the software plus dynos I learned a little from the experience. But yeah in the end you won’t “feel” anything outside of a 10% bump.

Many trust their butt dyno which is directly connected to the ear dyno (loud) and is also influenced by their eye dyno (go fast stickers)

I’m going to paint my tow hooks. Word on the street is it’ll boost my fuel economy by 2 mpg if I do red, 3 mpg if I go orange.
