Diesel Tundra

So my shop foreman tells me a dealership in San Diego has a concept Tundra with a Cummins in it. Thoughts? Especially since nissan just came out with the Cummins titan.

 

Neat. I'm guessing that it will be destroyed within the 2017 calendar year to never be heard of again. It'd be super cool if the project continued, but I think that hybrids are going to be what we're going to be seeing.

they are going hybrid I'm sure. Looks at the Nissan Titan diesel..not that great..the gaser got better reviews actually..

Unless it has a Toyota or hino engine in it, all I will say is good luck Toyota.

I'd be surprised if they did one, based on what I've seen in my brother and dad's Fords I'd prefer a turbocharged gasser. A buddy of mine had an Ecodiesel and he got rid of it within 5 months due to the constant DEF codes.

 

I read somewhere that Toyota dropped the diesel program for the Tundra due to a lack of a market for them.

 

Not a lack of market. The recession in 08 caused Toyota to stop their Hino diesel that was in development. All mfr truck sales took a hit. Gas and diesel trucks. The recession gave Toyota a good excuse to shelve it. 2nd Tundra had only been out for a year with great sales. Sales took a hit in 08/early 09. Toyota doesn't really need to have a diesel Tundra. It would be cool if a diesel version was available at some point, but cool doesn't necessarily mean profits.

 

Diesel dully is what they need, compete in the big boy market

 

Diesel trucks are great if you haul heavy loads, tow large flat beds with farm equipment, etc. For me, not a big deal at all. When I was in AK (chime in northern USA, Canucks too), in winter you have to keep them plugged in all the time. PITA. It's no wonder I saw so many gas Tacos and Tundras up there. Gas freezes at approx -150 degrees F. #2 diesel gels at 17.5 degrees. Only a couple of times my Taco cranked a little slow with some minor knocking at -20 degrees. why put up with the hassle if you don't need a diesel. If you need a diesel, then of course buy one. I wouldn't hold your breath for Toyota to come out with one.

 

Ugh, go drive that Titan. I did, the Cummins is sluggish like you wouldn't believe. And they're not near as powerful as the power stroke. See video, 1 Ford vs 3 Cummins
