I thought tundras were ahead of the game at least in the knee air bag department.

 

It’s no surprise that the tundra did poorly. All the models tested, except for the tundra, have completely redesigned their vehicles since 2016. The tundra has not been redesigned since 2007. The IIHS has been readjusting their testing standards each and every year. So, if the tundra remains unchanged for this long time, then, it’s going to be fail terribly.

Let’s just face the facts. The current Tundra has become antique. We need something significantly better from Toyota in this segment

For what it's worth the DC has fared better than the CM every year since 07 in crash tests. DC crash worthiness isn't that bad actually with only one Acceptable. Headlights have always sucked from day one and the child seat anchors do need improvement.

Personally I can care less. My Tundra is a million times safer than the 89' and 90' Iroc Camaro's that I had. I also have a 06' Miata. Do I feel safer in the Tundra or the Miata if I was in an accident? Does anyone really need me to answer that?

 

Tundra will make big improvements on next generation. When IIHS gives a poor test rating, manufacturers listen. Till then: when someone crosses the centerline, avoid the offset crash and hit them squarely head on.

If you look back at previous years the Toyota Tundra won the IIHS Best Safety pick for Large Truck in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012 ext cab, 2013 ext cab. Ebb and Flow of manufacturers. Toyota just slow to redesign, but when they do they will probably be top pick again for a few years. The crewmax is a heavy truck too, which compounds the crash exponentially. Shave some weight and it will do better.

After going into a barrier wall and then a guardrail with my Tundra at highway speed (after hitting a basketball siza piece of concrete) totalling it - I can vouch for it's front crash rating.

Also I think the only light on was the TPMS, which makes sense as I could literally have just reached down and picked it up.

Worked great. Only a sore shoulder the next day.

Umm don’t crash!

We didn’t buy our Tundras for it’s crash ratings. We bought them for it’s known reliability. I am a Firefighter,I have cut many people out of different types,manufacturers vehicles. No one car, truck, Or motorized vehicle is safer than the other. No two crashes are the same. All this crash rating in a controlled environment is bs to me.

 

My wife told me about this tonight. I told her it would just make me a better driver.

We all know that the current Tundra body and Frame are based on the 2014 model year. So the engineering, the construction, testing and the thought process of the Tundra frame is 5 years old or may be older while the IIHS test started 2017 so there will be some difference in standard. Tundra gets a poor rating against Ram/150 etc and other model years as they have redesigned their truck recently and therefore meets some of the standards.

To me, I see this test as a push for Toyota to keep getting better and better.

 

I was a paid professional firefighter too, and, I too have responded to a lot of horrific auto accidents. First of all, wear seat belts; they keep you from being ejected. The mechanics of the accident play a big roll in injuries and death. A t-bone collision at an intsection can cause serious injury, but having a vault like structure around you can minimize the intrusion. The mechanics here change when it’s big truck vs. Prius. Know what I’m sayin? My wife was involved in a t- bone accident, and she came out of it with bumps and bruises. She pulled out of a shopping center onto a city street with 35 mph speed limit, didn’t see (her fault) a 7 series Bimmer coming (city bus blocking visibility) and they hit and spun. She was in a Volvo and the passenger cage held strong. Front end of Bimmer collapsed in the crumple zones and the guy was unhurt. It’s my opinion, that well engineered frames and passenger cages give you better odds than not, and yes, no two accidents are the same, but simulated “real world” accidents, like off set frontal crash, show the weakest areas or strongest. You watch, Toyota will not take this lightly, and they will build a truck that can not only pull the space shuttle, but be dropped from the space shuttle.

 

Its older then 5yrs, the platform goes back to 2007. I think the big 3 have changed platforms twice within that same time frame so they are current to meet the needs of the current testing where the Tundra is not.
