I like the grill that came on my 16 Tundra, just wish it was white. Has anyone tried painting the chrome with any success? Any it sticking?

Yep, piece of cake to paint the chrome. It needs to be sanded really well and, of course, without leaving a bunch of scratches. Prime it well with a sand-able etching primer. If you don't have spray equipment, you can even order online your color in spray cans. Don't forget the clear top coat.

I used a pressure washer to knock off all the chrome. Then used adhesion promoter and then sprayed with color matched paint from automotive touchup.com. Did a few coats, then a few clear coats

Thanks! I declared a war against the chrome on my truck. Still debating blacking out the Toyota logo in the grille.

What psi on your pressure washer did you have to use to remove the chrome off your grill?

I just bought a complete rock warrior grille on ebay. Quick swap and color matched. for $200, why not. For gen 2 though.

Not sure what PSI it was, but its a gas pressure washer, so pretty high. Can't really do any damage to it I wouldnt think. Once you get the chrome coming off, it peels off pretty nicely. Just feels better to have my new paint onto plastic, as compared to something stuck on plastic. My chrome was actually bubbling off, so it was really easy to get it started.

Initially I kept the whole grille assembled and sprayed the chrome off. Near the end, I took out the middle plastic and had just the bit with the chrome. This was a total PITA as it was a bit floppy and hard to spray.

Plastidip works well for cheap and temporary applications. Paintscratch.com has paint match spray cans

Aww man. I don't understand the war on chrome. Im not trying to drive a hot rod either though. I like balance.
The trd wheels are a perfect example of this for my taste. Nice amount of black and chrome.
I think what Toyota has done with the 3rd gen bumpers is killer. Part black, part chrome. I think it's a great look.

I love both looks. I think it all depends on what theme you're going for. It has to tie in with the wheels, bars, grille etc.
I think second gens look better with chrome and third gens look better without. Just me though.

Yeah that makes sense. I think if you're gonna go black you'll never go... wait that's not appropriate. Hahahaha

I think at a certain point you have to go all the way otherwise it looks "off". But like I said before. I dig a little balance.

Yeah I do dig a balance too. i tried plastidipping my badges, even put some glossifier but it doesn't look right for some reason. Of course I have a dark gray truck, and that's probably a big reason. Black badges look great on lighter colored trucks. Gotta have some contrast I guess

I was not digging all that chrome out front and wanted to tone it down a little bit. I like Plastidip!
