Weather is turning and looks like itll be a slow week. Sucks because I took this week off from work as historically it's been our busiest week. Supposed to be very very windy tomorrow so I'll have to go check for blown off buckets. Then looks like the high temp will be dropping into the 20s til Thursday or Friday. This means no sap for several days. Tomorrow i will boil whatever sap is left, check all the buckets. And stack up some wood. Likely will take Tuesday off and do some grocery shopping and stuff around the house. Wednesday I'll get 2 new collection/transfer tanks (aka trash cans lol) and cut and stack more wood. Thursday and Friday will hopefully yield some sap so we can boil Saturday.

Very windy today. I have 200 gallons to boil. The wind is killing me as far as steam removal goes, the cupola is about useless when it starts to swirl. Oh well I will battle thru the sauna conditions. Sap is frozen in the taps and will be for a few days. Good time to catch up on a few things.

This is a great idea, maybe. I guess it'd be a challenge to work someone in last minute, this season, but the next time you meet someone who expresses interest in learning, and says they 'wish', maybe see if they mean it.... ;)
Ha! Dogsbody assigned. How'd she take the news?

I'm glad to know this is making so much difference in your workload! I hope this will offset some of that lost partner manpower you're facing this season....

Bummer about the timing of this cold snap conflicting with your time off. Weather's a crazy factour the rest of us, not interacting with nature in the way that you are, easily forget about. It sure is a treat, getting this glimpse though, reading along. Take care not to over-extend yourself, Sean!

Finally got some warm weather. Was 40 and sunny today so the sap was flowing very well. Problem is that the sap has been dripping on and off for about a week, not enough to collect, but it's been single digits for night temps. So most of the buckets have a gallon or 2 of frozen sap in them. Some melted today but about 1/3 of our sap is still frozen solid. Hopefully tomorrow is warm enough to melt the rest down and also drip out a couple hundred gallons.

Also today we finally got the metal roofing done on the wood shed. So we now have a 16'x10' x 7' tall place to keep wood stored and dry. Huge accomplishment for the future. Still have some finish work to do on the wood shed but its dried in and functional so I'm happy.

Will be out collecting sap and cooking syrup tomorrow, I'll be sure to get some pics.

Sunday sucked so much. It didnt quite get as warm as forecasted. Was around 35 and raining all damn day. Went out and collected about 100 gallons of sap and cooked down everything we had. All the buckets still were 1/4 to 3/4 full of frozen sap. In anticipation of today being warm and a good sap flow, I decided I needed to find a away to collect the ice (frozen sap), so the buckets wouldn't overflow today.
We have a 250 gallon tank on the truck but the opening to pour the sap in is about 6 inches. Not big enough to fit the giant sap-sicles into. I really didnt want to lose any sap as it's already been a slow year.
So I headed out in the rain with my 5 gallon pails and started just dumping the frozen sap into them. I went to home depot and bought 4 35 gallon trash cans to house the ice til it melts then I can cook it. So i went tree to tree, collected 190 sap-sicles and filled up every trash can and every 5 gallon pail i had. A lot of it melted today in the sun, probably 150 gallons worth.
I worked 9am-10pm today so I didn't get out to collect today's sap. I will be doing that tomorrow, as well as pumping out the melted sap from the barrels and into my tank.
The weather looks good the rest of the week so hopefully we can catch back up on the slow season.

Went out today and got about 400 gallons of sap, still quite a bit of ice in my holding tanks but the temps look good this week. I'm very sore right now but will be back at it tomorrow. I expect a similar amount of sap and I will definitely need to cook some down in the afternoon, hopefully my brother will be able to do some evening shift cooking this week.

So it got colder than expected last night and I had to collect in the morning today rather than the afternoon because my daughter had a half day.
Ended up having a friend help me collect which is always a huge help. Unfortunately for me, the timing was bad. Since we collected sap early after a cold night, we only got 150 gallons. I'm sure if we had collected at 4pm we would have had 300. Oh well that's the way it goes.
My brother is cooking as much as he can tonight. I work 9am-930 PM tomorrow and my brother can't collect at all tomorrow. So I will go out Friday a.m. and surely have a lot of full buckets, its supposed to get into the 50s the next couple days which is great for sap flow.

Trying to catch up on sap today. Trees have been flowing really well and we have been getting a few hundred gallons per day. I was able to get through a couple hundred today and make about 4 gallons of syrup. Still have 250 gallons left and need to collect sap tomorrow morning. My guess is there will be another 400+ gallons tomorrow when I go out. We are up around 30 gallons of syrup made this far, so about 1500 gallons of sap cooked. As usual the biggest problem is good dry wood to burn but I'm doing the best I can. Lots of work and I'm beat half way through the season.

As soon as I have time to get it filtered and bottled I will update here with ordering info. I'm swamped between just getting the sap collected and boiled down, it may be a month or so before I can get any in bottles.
