Sounds like a diesel????

I currently bought a 17 tundra SR5 trd off-road 4x4. The truck has 20k on it, the only two thing that I’m concerned about is the truck has like a diesel sounds to it???? Anyone experienced this? Also a small whistle when I tend to accelerate. Not sure if it’s the mesh scene I read about or what lol

 

Uh... explain “sounds like diesel”. If your gas truck sounds like a diesel generally that sound is pre-ignition aka “knock”. That’s the sound of a gas engine killing itself.

 

Or exhaust leak.

 

Funny you say that my '18 kinda sounds like a diesel also. Thought it was strange at first but figured it was the lift changing the sound cause the ground clearance. It's not a very noticeable diesel sound just a glimmer of a diesel sound. I don't get any whistle tho.
It's not a knock either. Just when it is sitting idling it just has a very small diesel sound to it.

 

@reelcracker thats exactly how mine is but mine is still stock. It only has 20k on it so im going to take it in and get it checked out!!!

 

It’s a normal sound, there are several threads on this topic. It’s a Toyota so stop worrying and start driving it!

 

I was sitting in a parking lot on the phone the other day when a man asked me what kind of diesel was in my truck. I told him it was a gas burner, he laughed and said I may want to get it looked at.

When i first bought the trundra i had the same concern. Dealer states "32 valves what do you expect it to sound like! Lol. My budy has a 18 and it sounds the same.

 

It’s an all aluminum motor with a shit ton of valvetrain components. You’re going to hear a lot of engine noise on these engines. You just never heard it in older vehicles because the cast Iron block and heads absorbed all the sound.

The whistle noise is just the intake. It’s normal.

 

I had k&n cold air induction installed on mine and it whistles now. It does not sound like a diesel however.

 

Replace the throttle body gasket/screen with just a gasket. The screen increases the whistle noise.

 

I'll have the dealer do that, since they installed it. Thanks for the heads up.

 

No problem. It’s a $6 oem part. Easy swap to diy.

 

My ‘15 with about 68K miles has always sounded like that when cold and first starting up.

 

Haha yep that's what I planned on. Plus I came from a taco so I figured it was just big boy engine sound. I actually really like it. I sit around in my driveway just listening to it sometimes. Jk I don't but it does sound kewl.

 

Did you give him the finger? LOL! Some people are quick to put down Toyota whenever they have the smallest issues. Ready to hate. People don’t realize that is the nature and overhead cam amd aluminum.

It’s the vvt. I’ve had 2 tundras, both had a small diesel sound.

 

my friends think my truck sounds like a duramax at idle, our trucks at idle have a pretty deep exhaust note that could be mistaken for a diesel. nothing wrong at all

 

For real I was at the supercross this week and and when they pulled out a Tacoma and a tundra. The guys behind me said Toyota trucks are a joke. I just laughed out loud. Even more when I heard they drive fords.

 

You have to have thick skin to drive a Toyota

 

Exactly, a stock 2007 tundra made it to a million miles, the only domestic trucks that have made it there aren't half tons, only 3/4 and 1 tons

 

It’s almost the equivalent to sitting in the stands hearing someone talk about your kid that way.

 

Until you're most hillbilly friend tells you he is saving up his money so he can put a down payment on a nice tundra.

 

Should I look for that gasket on Toyota's website or K&N's?

 

Thick skin, yes, but fat wallet when it comes to resale. Big 3 can’t touch resale value of a Tundra.

I got rid of my old Silverado because of lifter noise. Hopped in this thing the day after I bought it new and thought wth. Just spent 45k and it sounds like this? Had to laugh at myself a little after that.
