Flattened out rear leaf springs

I was hooking up my aftermarket tailgate backup camera, when I glanced over the leaf springs and noticed they looked flat. I am pretty they were rounded off but I don't look at them very often so I'm not sure. Is this normal or do I have to replace them.

Someone here with a new truck needs to take a measurement from the center of the wheel to the fender lip. Then report back after a few years to see if anything has changed. My springs from what I can remember have always looked fairly flat from day one. I lifted the front of my truck 2 inches. That should give me a little rake but my truck almost has negative rake or very level.

 

Time to replace them. I started a thread about what I did. It’s a bit long but has a lot of good info in there.

In the interim you could add +1 coach builder shackle.

 

Look normal to me. I have a brand new set of ICON RXT installed and they're pretty close to flat too. The stock springs looked the same when I removed them.

 

My Alcan’s at stock lift look just like on day 1. Called Bill and said his would be very flat at stock height. Just throwing this data point out there.

 

Really?? I have the set and they are not flat. They have a good arch to them. Had them since November of 2018

 

how many miles you got on them OP ? also do you haul a lot and lastly any shackles ?

 

I remember my stock leafs still had a fair amount of curve to them when I upgraded my suspension, so I'm pretty sure that ain't normal.

 

I have about 62,000 miles on them. Few years ago I was doing a concrete project at work and was hauling between 500 and 1000 pounds for about 2 months.

I never noticed any abnormal sagging so i didnt pay it no mind, until yesterday and some topics I did find online were mixed.

Typical Toyota springs, they are soft and weak. My Tacoma has the same issue and I'm looking to upgrade those, Tundra isn't there yet but I bet once I'm close to 60k it will be.

 

Our old F250 at work actually looked like they curved down from hauling heavy products all the time. Full pallets of sand, concrete and bricks constantly.

 

The original leaf pack on my '07 @ 270,000, they were toast.

 

Mine are set on Option 1 and I have some extra weight in the back.

 

Toyota had to replace leaf springs on my 2011 tacoma that flattened out just like these ones in the OPs picture. Loaded it to the rated 1350#, drove 60 miles on a flat gentle freeway, and they were toast. Had the weight in it for 2 hours, tops.

 

Yep I had the TSB springs done to mine as well, they looked good at first and a 4 leaf pack but with 50k miles on them now they are Junk. I'm gonna go with a set of Dakar's on that truck. Toyota just doesn't make a strong leaf spring, they are pretty much flat without any weight on them as well.

 

Look at many tacomas driving around. Lots of them have leaf springs so flat they look negative arched

 

When I had two mountain bikes on the back and gear, I looked nose high. For a 40 + k truck that shouldn't happen. I did my research and found Toyota uses soft leaf springs, like we own grocery getter. So I went off and ordered a custom Alcan leaf pack build 500 lbs over capacity. Haven't looked back since. I added a +1 CB shackles and that was the icing on the cake. If you can swing it buy a custom leaf pack, Alcan, Deaver you can't go wrong. Best major mod so far.

 

It would be the weight then. I’m on option 1 as well. Could always go to option 2 then it shouldn’t be flat after that.

But they flatten out when I tow and sit on Timbrens. I can imagine a few years of towing and I’ll lose natural rake and be flatter with no payload.

Mine only has 31k miles on it and they are looking like yours, fortunately replacements (maybe Deavers) are in my future!

 

It really is an embarrassing weak point for a "tough" truck. Mere months before I had that tacoma, I had a 1994 chevy tracker 2wd for hauling things for my personal yard work, one of those 2 door convertible models. I had removed the back seats to make a small pickup out of it, and 1 day I made a wall of cardboard boxes between the back and the front, to contain the load of gravel I was going to pick up (seriously) for a short walkway (it worked well). I loaded up the entire rear of that truck with gravel, up and over the sides of the back. Well over 1,000 pounds, if not double that. That poor truck took that load, squatted down on the axle, and gave no shits. Unloaded it, and it was fine. It is Sad when an old GEO(made for economy) is a more rugged product than a new Tacoma(made to be rugged). I do miss that Tracker...

 

Thanks for the input. I was going to wait another year or so to replace the the suspension all around (now the leaf springs) pgand get bigger tires at the same time but I guess I'll have to get them some time soon. It's just my luck, after I just spent $1500 on a new audio system I just happened to notice this issue.

 

@M C M has a nice little package for us Tundras: ADS triple bypasses rear + Deaver springs and he will throw shackles, u-bolts and bushings for free .

Is premature spring failure a warranty issue? My 2016 Tundra with 31k miles springs look like Rex K’s, they are not only flat but have a reverse curve almost like his photo.

 

They never even batted an eye, fixed it without question. I think it was still around 10k in miles and a year old at the time. The sticky clutch pedal was another matter. From day 1 the pedal would stick briefly but the clutch engaged and disengaged smoothly. Not a clutch issue, a pedal sticking issue. The first dickheads to look said "ooop, derp, its a clutch issue, not warrentied". Then I pointed out that, no, its a slave cylinder issue, the truck is brand new, and went to a better dealer with better non derpy mechanics, who fixed it, without me even needing to explain why it was happening. True pros. Within a year of that the first dealer fired their ENTIRE service dept!
