New here with a 12 TRD. Hopefully this is an easy fix. Shifter won't come out of park unless I use the manual release. Thought it might be a fuse for the brake lights, but they are working. Any ideas where to check next?

Did you confirm your blinkers and brake lights are physically working?

    Welcome

Crazy idea but is the steering wheel locked, and if so, does it have any play in it?

Welcome from WI. If all your fuses are good and it's not just torque locked from being parked on an incline the next place to check (part to replace) is the brake switch. Fairly inexpensive and easy to swap out.

Thanks for all of the welcomes. Not parked on an incline. Steering wheel isn't locked. No warning lights. The brake switch you are referring to is at the brake pedal?

In the shifter there is a little solenoid that is powered by the brake light circuit, and you’re doing it’s job with the manual release. You could check for power and ground to it with your brakes applied.

Any sugary drinks spilled in the shifter area? Yes or no, it might just be sticking.

You checked the fuses under the dash and not just the ones under hood.

Those under dash fuses are very hard to see. You have to meter them or pull them to tell if they are open.

Check your cargo light or courtesy fuse. Had the same thing happen and it was a fuse.

Thanks for all of the replies. Cargo light is good. I checked the fuses under the hood. I need to check the ones under the dash. Where is the solenoid and how do I get to it?

Yes, it's at the top of the brake pedal arm.

To confirm whether the switch is working or not, does that same switch also turn on the brake lights?

It does, but the brake lights working doesn't necessarily confirm that the switch is good. Besides turning the brake lights on and off it also tells the ECU to lock or unlock the gear shift solenoid, overrides the cruise and communicates with the ABS and ignition switch thru the ECU.

Just had this happen to me this morning as well. I checked under the dash and under the hood at the TAIL 15A fuse as well as under the hood with the 15A STOP all are good. Would the courtesy or cargo fuse really cause that to happen ?

It could. Make sure you check all of the fuses related to your lighting, tails, tail relay, brakes, chmsl, cargo, etc. Welcome from WI.

Hmmm well it took an interesting turn yesterday, ran through the fuses and pulled a few to look and all are still good and now my parking sensors are not working . . . I only pulled the TAIL, STOP, and towing ones. I did pull the brake sensor out of the mount to check continuity so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with coding with the system.

Anyone got any thoughts as to why they parking sensors are not working after pulling some fuses ? In the back of my noodle brain I got this feeling that there is actually an on/off switch for it but I just can't remember

Ugh, I'm an idiot. I found the parking sensor switch when I went back out to truck so that is working again, stupid steering wheel is positioned just so that I cannot see the P switch so I never noticed it was off. So ya'll can disregard my parking sensor(s) issue above. Taking truck to stealer on Monday to have them figure out why I'm stuck in park when all my fuses & lights work. Will let you know what they find
