My 08 Tundra is dead, but Gen 3 is not as strong!

My 08 Crewmax Limited was completely destroyed in a triple roll-over accident a few weeks ago. Thanks to the construction of the truck we all walked away from it. But now I have been looking at the Gen 3 Tundras and frankly, I'm disappointed! The tow rating is lower and the truck seems much less powerful. I know it's rated at the same horsepower and torque numbers, but the truck I drove was less peppy than mine. Maybe it needed broken in. Is the tow rating 600 lbs less because they took the gas tank from 21 to 38 gallons?! Let's see 17 gallons at 6.8 lb = 115.6 lb
Ok, so that's not all of it. The weight of the truck is the same. All I can figure is that Toyota wanted to give themselves some more wiggle room on the warranty repairs if you tow.
I would appreciate any thoughts from the forum on why the rating is less.
Oh, and here's a picture of the aftermath.20160821_185516.jpg

Not sure about it because I own a 2nd Gen and I'm still in love with it and I'm glad you and your family walked out safe....one of the more reason I love tundras

From what I've heard, I lot of people complained about how sensitive the throttle was so they remapped the throttle so it's not as sensitive. Same power, you just have to push the peddle down more, or push the tow haul button. I believe the tow rating decrease was due to the implementation of the new tow rating system. Nothing really changed, they just use a new system to figure out the tow rating.

Glad to hear you are ok after that. About 10 years ago my wife was driving our first gen Tundra driving back from Vegas by herself and went off the highway going 70 mph. A couple behind her said the truck rolled 3 times down a 50 ft embankment. The truck was totaled. She came out a bit frazzled but unscathed. That sold me on the Tundra and we replaced it with a gen 2.

    Thanks Guys!

Yes, myself, my wife and our 22 year old son, all walked away from the accident. (After we figured out how to unbuckle our seat belts while hanging upside down) My son took 5 stitches in his elbow from broken glass, but that was the worst we got. I was really bummed though. The truck was running the best it had ever run since new. I had just replaced the rear wheel bearings and fixed an incorrectly installed axle baffle plate and it had just come back from the body shop to repair a goose strike to the grill a few weeks earlier. (yes, the blasted thing did $3,600 damage to the front of the truck!)

I will look into SAE-J2807, and yes the throttle WAS touchy if you were not used to it. These "fly by wire" throttles do take some getting used to.

I was hoping that all that really changed were some software settings that could be tweaked on a new truck.

    Thanks Again!,

Ouch!! Glad all are ok. I have a 1st Gen Tundra and love it. Hope the new one you got continues to grow on you. Good to see that the Toyota lived up to the safety standards.

Damn thats a nasty wreck, good to see everyone make it out alright!

The guts under the refreshed body of the 3rd gen is basically identical to the 2nd gen. The only real thing changed is the transfer case, and now a larger fuel tank. Engine, trans, axles, frame are all the same. Still just as solid of a truck, just a bit more modern and refined compared to the 2nd gen

Only Ford and Toyota meet the new tow rating.

I had and 08 and throttle was very sensitive. Truck felt really quick off the line. Bought a 2016 sr5. Felt like you did. I have had the truck about 2 months still getting used to it. The best description i can give you on the difference is that the 2016 feels alot more civilized, other than that i really am enjoying the new one. Just 1 more thing that really annoys me is the small digital display in center of screen. Not much to look at but useless info while your driving. Which you could just have like a normal PRND. Other than that tundra truck is fantastic.

Wow! That's a wreck. I'm really glad to hear everyone walked away.
I don't know, but don't the tuners, Bully Dog and Hypertech offer a little sportier throttle response?

Balou - Thanks, my 08 had a small driver information screen that I just kept on the mileage graph. I was trying to encourage myself to keep a light foot on the pedal. Didn't work though Lol!

16tunterd - Yes, I was just about to buy the Bully Dog tuner when the accident happened. I always told myself that I would buy one after the truck warranty expired. The dealer would have looked for any excuse to void the warranty and I'm sure the Bully Dog tuner would have done the trick! Especially since Bully Dog broke Toyota's software encryption!

I think I am going to wait until March to buy a new Tundra. I guess I will just have to be content with driving my 96 Impala SS until then.

Bought a 2017 when my 07 got totaled a month ago and I thought the same thing, I just hit 500 miles and it feels a little bit better but still less power I think. The throttle is definitely smother tho... I believe they changed the gearing also.

Sounds like you need a 2nd Gen with converted body style to 3rd Gen!!
