So i've had my 5.7 two months. Put about 2000k miles on it. I love it.....but...the thing I still can't get used to is how loud the engine (fan?) is when accelerating from stop. To me, it sounds like a big ass diesel trying to get up to speed. I can't tell if the truck is actually sluggish, but it def sounds sluggish. Is it just the 4.30 gearing and all 5.7s are like this, or is my truck different?? My previous truck was a 5.3 silverado, and I've driven the 5.4 triton...and man they have serious pick-up from stop. Thoughts?

hmm... I have the 5.7 and I love the sound of it. It is also very snappy off the line and gets up to speed very quickly. I think read somewhere that the 0-60 time for the 2016 tundra is 6.6 seconds. I am extremely pleased with its performance.

The fan on mine does that as well, it drives my pal crazy. Any chance to aggravate my buddies!

    This is normal.

Not sure if this is a new truck or a used truck that you put 2000 miles on. You should fill out your profile so we know.

Anyway, this is just your clutch fan engaging at low air flow conditions to maintain temperature. Not sure what part of the country you are in, but this time of year is hot, and the added engine cooling is needed.

Under normal conditions, you should hear the fan when taking off and then stop after 10-20 seconds depending on your cooling system needs. If the fan is staying on more than that empty and you're not in 110*F weather, you may have a good complaint about sound and power. (the clutch fan fully engaged takes a bit of power)

Recently on a trip of mine towing in the mountains at 92*F, 8-10K feet of elevation I noticed my fan was on more than normal too. I did check out my screen I installed to catch all the bugs, wasps, and grasshoppers in CO. Sure as hell, the damn screen was packed full of bugs. Another good mod to do when you purchase a truck. The AC condenser, radiator, power steering, trans cooler will thank you years later when others cooling performance takes a crap and yours does not. I just buy the screen material at Home Depot for cheap. Get the synthetic fiber material.

Great info! You taught me a lot. It is a used truck, has just under 18k miles. Also, I'm in Houston, and its been very hot...After reading your response and the other responses I feel better about it. Only question I have now is...does Ford and Chevy fan clutch behave like this? I've never noticed this sound on other trucks.

Some others may use an electric fan, often they're quieter and run at a lower speed but more continuously. They're not connected to engine RPM either, so it's likely not as audible.

I've read where a few others do this. Where do you attach the screen to? I assume it is behind the grill, between grill and radiator? Thanks

OP,FWIW,if fanclutch runs continuously, may need to check clutch. Uncommon to wear out at that mileage, but not unheard of

I just cut the screen in a somewhat close shape of the inlet, then used the factory bolts. Do not use the horn mounting bolts. I believe this is the ground for the horn and they will not work.

This screen has 75k miles on it.

Ford uses an electric fan. I believe GM and Ram do as well. Toyota has stuck to the tried and true mechanical fan. And yes- it's loud.
As far as sluggish, hit the tow haul button. It's pretty aggressive. I came from an Ecoboost F150 and the tow haul button makes them "feel" similar.

Ditto on the Tow Haul button, mechanical fan. I like that screen idea. I just happen to have some left over window screen material. Cool.

That is my second career choice....kind of a pain in the ass though.

The amount of rocks sitting at the bottom of that screen every two weeks is amazing. My AC condenser would be trashed by now.

I really like the idea of the screen. I've had radiators get pretty gunked up from all of the high speed collisions with bugs and they are pretty hard to clean up after they have had a chance to bake on. I've also noticed that some insect innards are pretty corrosive. Looks like another project coming up this weekend.

Thanks for the pictures. I am amazed at how many bugs get stuck in the radiator and we have some BIG bugs here in Texas LOL. I assume there is no issue with air flow?

Only issue I have with air flow is on my last trip. I did a bunch of towing miles next to a river and it seemed like every bee, grasshopper, and bug was bound and determined to see what its ass looked like one last time. I wish that a picture was taken, but the screen was pretty plugged up. My fan stayed engaged a little longer going over Vail Pass (Ike Gauntlet), but it was pretty hot out and I pulled the pass at speed limit with ~8500 lbs.

The lower part of the front end can be sealed up too, but I didn't do that part. I mostly just covered the top to save the AC condenser and possibly the radiator. So far, the bottom part is pretty clean.

Wait a second. Might you be suggesting that using the T/H button on our 380HP Tundras will make them feel similar to 365HP EcoBurp? :p:D
