If I ever get away from a toyhauler, I would say this would be my top choice so far. I wish it had windows in the shell but still rad

Appreciate it. My beef with a bigger RTT is that they physically take up more space, vertically. If I were to go with a bigger tent, I would need to get a taller rack and hang the tent a bit off the front of my roof. Problem is this would be physically taller than the GFC. Also, getting my 80lb dog into the RTT now sucks, going with a taller rack will only make it worse. Main reason why I am looking at the GFC, is so the dog can sleep on the bed floor and the humans up top with an overall longer sleeping space. Also, i could setup one of those Mr. buddy heaters on the bed floor and warm up the GFC., for those super cold camping trips. They are still a butt load of cash, so I am no where near committing to one yet, but I would also like to look at one in person. I also wheel my truck pretty hard, so I want to make sure it and my bed, will hold up to the abuse.

Just took the maiden voyage last week. This is everything I thought it would be...love it!

I spent three nights in three separate spots, super easy to tear down and move out.

I'm still on the stock rear suspension, thinking there's some work to be done there. Seems to sag a little bit fully loaded with camp gear. Been reading up on mid travel kits. Need to let the sting of the camper purchase wear off before bringing this one to the family accountant...

Very happy with it so far.

Looks great man. Did Graeme deliver it to you? What is your suspension set-up as is? Maybe a Deaver pack or somethign custom from Alcan if you're in CO?

Thanks man. No, I picked it up in Bozeman mid December. Graeme did the install though. Super nice guy. I'm just leveled with 5100s for now. I am in CO, so custom packs sound like the right thing to do.

looks good! Do you think it is more likely to bend the bed rails since it only contacts the inner most portion?

Damn... I want one of these. Any chance you’re willing to do an honest review of this thing at like 6mos? Not sure I’m ready to pull the trigger on a non-refundable deposit, but super curious about them.

Not sure about that. Hopefully not. Was thinking about getting bed stiffeners, but not high on my list. I'm not desert pre running or anything crazy...yet!

Wife and I are seriously considering one of these. We have had a camper shell and now a bed rack + RTT. While I'm finding nothing is perfect, this really seems to check the most boxes. Get the weatherproof and secure qualities of a camper shell, plus more storage space than a bed rack allows for, and still have a rugged sleeping platform to sleep in. I do wish they put windows on the sides a la a normal camper shell. We have a pup who rides in the back. Giving her some more ventilation other than cracking a side panel and more opportunity to see out would be big plus.

Please continue to update this with pictures/thoughts you may have. Congrats on the purchase!

Stupid question time: I watched the video on their website and I've never seen one in person, but how do you escape from this once you've secured yourself inside? With the tailgate up and the rear camper hatch secured how does one unlock them from the inside? Doesn't make much sense that you can shut the tailgate but have to leave the rear hatch open for someone to either snatch your stuff or be a dick and close the door leaving you trapped... I know I'm missing something but I didn't see any ladder provisions.

    Thanks,

    Tom

I believe the end that would be over the tailgate opens via zipper. Pic shows flap open for air but also opens

Yeah that I saw in the video. I'm talking about the aluminum/composite door (hatch whatever) that would fold down and touch the tailgate once that is closed. What you're suggesting would make sense if there was a ladder and that was the ingress/egress once the camper was closed up and secure.

Ahh, yes i see your point. Their Roof Top Tent comes with a ladder and i believe a zip door on the side is an option on both types. Lemme watch their vodeo again, maybe i missed it too..lol

you open the back composite hatch, then tailgate and climb out....no ladder. The added challenge is the reason some competitors have barn doors or are working on barn door options.

Gotcha. Would be a fun ride sliding out that upper zippered area trying to unlatch the composite hatch. Thanks for the info!

    Congrats on pulling the trigger!!

GFC states "**Due to large order volume, camper orders placed today have an estimated start date of June 2020." Did you get a potential completion date? I couldn't find a lead time listed on their website.

Nope. Just rolling with it. We’ll get it when we do.

Edit: it looks like based on the Tacoma guys they take about 4-6 weeks to go from “in production” to “in assembly”

Seriously. I read on Tacomaworld they keep getting faster and faster at building them. I do agree though, a year plus for anything like this is excessive. Wouldn't want them to cut corners or change quality, but adding some staff/space would surely help. I do wonder from a business perspective if they are guarding against the initial wave of purchasers buying one and then the "flood gates" of orders turns into a "slow drip."

Still loving the camper...even though I haven't been using it nearly enough. I pop it when we're riding backcountry, but not much camping yet. Gonna get the full family out for spring break though so that'll be the real test. I'll work on some better pics on that trip...denver to San Diego.20190316_190104.jpg

As a topper, it's awesome. Love the side panel access. I sealed the tailgate this weekend, so we'll see if that keeps the water drips down. Small amounts of water seem to come from the rear corners and drip along the bed rails. My biggest gripe is that the latches can freeze up when weather conditions are right (bomb cyclone!), but always find a way to pop the latches to get the board out. Never had a pickup/topper before, so not sure if this is an issue on other brands.

I would buy one of these again in a heartbeat, stoked for camping season! Got my KISS bed/bench finished...seems sturdy and it's relatively light. Guessing around 100#s. Dont want to bring down the stellar gas mileage , which doesn't seem to be affected around town.

There is a ladder option, but I dont feel the need for it yet. My first night in the camper was in stealth mode without popping the top in park city. I "locked" the rear hatch closed with a tie down strap. You cant latch, unlatch or lock from the inside, unfortunately. My escape plan if someone locked me in was to remove the panel on the inside of tailgate and pop the lower hatch open. The way the upper hatch seals, you can open the lower without the top open. Not ideal, but if you have a star bit, you're not trapped forever.

Good info, thank you. 4-6 weeks is totally doable I just didn't want to get into the situation of a 8+ month build time and then start getting the "next week" answer when asked for a delivery. @Tundrado nice setup

This is pretty surprising to hear. So can you close the rear door completely, or does it stay cracked open?

Yep, you can pull it tight from the inside, just cant work the latches.

I developed some pretty serious OCD checking the Tacoma world thread and the gfc leaderboard!
