I have a 14’ CM 4x4. Just changed my oil and to get it in the correct specs (per manual) is 7.9 with oil filter change, I just put in 9.5 QUARTS to get it show correct on the dip stick? Is this correct? Too much? How much do y’all put in your tundras?

Ps I’ve read some threads on here regarding oil but can’t seem to find a clear cut answer. Don’t we all have the same engine? Why is everyone’s (including the manuals) numbers different?

    Oil: mobile 1 0w20
    Filter: K&N

Looks like 8.5 quarts with filter is correct.

Whhooooooooaaaaaaaaaa Nellie. 9.5 is too much where I come from. Sure you're reading it correct? New 0W20 is reeeeeeally hard to read on the dipstick.

Just did mine yesterday. Took a solid 8.5qts to hit the full line. I ran it and checked it after it say for 2 hours and it was right on. I started with 7.5 and it was clearly low then added 0.5qts at a time till it showed full. 2019 5.7L Platinum.

let it sit for a half hour with 8 quarts, or take it for a drive. it comes in correctly on the dipstick but not immediatly. 9.5 is tooooo much.

    Too many…scratch that…not done yet.
    For 2014+, 7.9 Brotha!
The "filter/no filter" language, typically means if you've already added oil to the filter before putting it back in. Given the design of the filter housing, it would be damn hard to get 4/10 a qt. of oil in the filter/housing before reinstalling.

If memory serves, there was a slight change in the oil filter housing or pan design from the 2nd gen to the 3rd gen...hence the difference in some capacity's being 7.4 and 7.9.

Like @TundraMcGov. said, the 0W-20 is super thin...and is typically harder to see, especially right after changing.

You can pour a good amount of oil into the filter housing. Good idea since it presoaks the element

True. I know you can soak the filter and fill the bottom of the housing. I usually put some in it. I've just never added .4 a qt.

I do wish we had a standard filter connection.

Yeah, the standard filter works for big rigs. Why some nerd at toyota wanted a PITA version is beyond me

Idk, I’m thinking it could be a human error ( I took it to a shop) I drive my truck aroun and let it sit for about a hour and check the oil. It is reading just under the the MAX dot. What do you guys think maybe the tech Mis counted the quarts he put in and it’s actually 8.5 not 9.5!!!??

If it was just changed recently, I'd say get a new or really clean drain pan...drain the oil and the filter (don't remove the filter housing)...then measure out and replace the 7.9 qts.

My confusion is that , 9.5 quarts that the tech supposedly put in it show dead center on the dash gauge and even with the top dot on the dip stick!?!?

Did they charge you for the extra quart and a half? Maybe they just wanted to make a few extra bucks. Whenever I change my oil, 7.9 quarts is perfect. Right at the top of the full mark. Actually I just dump in eight.

Just taking this moment to emphasize to those who may not be aware of this ^^^. Again: the gauge is oil PRESSURE. Not oil level. In all fairness the little "picture" with the gauge can certainly lead a person to think it's level. But, again: it is pressure. Oil pressure. It's also a good idea to understand what oil pressures you have under different conditions (idle, highway on ramp acceleration, etc) that way you can identify any abnormalities in oil pressure. Though, you bought a Toyota to not have to worry about oil pressure. If you swap around engine oil brands you can see if there's any change in behavior.

O.K. Time for recess. Class dismissed.

    Owners Manual says:
    With Filter: 8.5, not 8
    Without filter: 7.9

That is what I would go with.

2014 5.7 here. I vacuum pull mine out through the dipstick. I vacuum it out till the point there is not a drop that will come out of the drain plug on level ground. I then change the oil filter with new Toyota filter. I have NEVER had to add more than 8.5 quarts. I assume a different filter size or mass could change the volume of oil but not the tune of 1 quart....

I put in 8.2 and it's always just below the full dot. 9.5 is definitely too much. Also make sure you're checking the level correctly. Don't let it sit for an hour. Get the truck up to operating temp, park on level ground, shut it off and let it sit for 5 minutes, pull the stick and wipe it off, reinsert for a couple of seconds, pull it and check the level.

Probably just finally got it right. :)

2014 says 7.9 but I've always put in about 8.5 quarts.
