What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Looking forward to seeing how these perform with actual pictures of the beam at night rather than just pictures of a lens inside a housing.

The lens look cool, but I want to see the things work at night for the amount of cost and labor involved.

 

Washed off the salt and mud. Really spent some time water jet washing out the radiators, as I’ve never done before. Seemed like the water flowed through the fins better after finishing.

Put on some synthetic wax. Checked fluids and crawled under to give her a check. All is well. Looking at a drain and fill on the transmission (10k miles) this weekend. Weather permitting.

 

I've seen a few output shots and they look great. I'll be comparing them to my 3.0s and my brother's 4.0s as well.

Facebook has been a dick all day. This is the best I could find. Basically along the cutoff there's a beam of usable light that spans across the high beam giving you further light output down the road. I believe lightwerx has videos of it explaining that light band. Follow the cutoff on the sides along the trees straight across and you'll see that band of light.

5.0 looks way better. Warmer light. Better disbursement. More OEM+ looking performance wise. Skirts arising.

 

Just think if we where Toyota guys BMW,Subaru,isuzu...lol

 

Today I'm sourcing parts. Does anyone have feedback on Gates? They sell a kit that includes the drive belt, idler pulley, and tensioner.

I got my truck back today from the 4.88 gear install, along with 250cc 12-hole injectors, and BAMuffler catback exhaust. Since making the decision to spruce up my '02, I have done a lot of mods in a relatively short period of time. (Mild Lift, new brakes, Hellwig rear swaybar, Load Class "E" tires). I'm not really sure how to quantify the effect of these mods yet , other than to say it feels like an entirely different truck now.

With the regear, it pulls much harder, and feels "always on the power". Throttle response has noticeably improved, and the shift points seem to have moved around a bit. My goal was to get some more grunt for towing. I think that mission has been accomplished.

But after nearly 17 years of sofa-like cruising around in a pretty much bone-stock truck, these changes are going to take some getting-used to. My senses are truly heightened now while driving this vehicle. I'm hearing and feeling so much more - the low rumble of the V8 - the power of the engine - the much firmer and more controlled handling - the stiff sidewalls of the tires transmit a lot more feedback from the road. It's really a big difference overall.

So far I'd say, these changes are mostly for the good, but like all mods - there's always some give and take.

My speedo is off by over 20%. I'm seeing a GPS Speed of 65 mph show as as 78 mph on my speedo. (I'm on 265/75/16's). Time for a Yellow Box, I guess. Anyone done an install on a 2000-2003 that can give me some pointers?

And I'm already feeling a little warpage/vibrations from my brand new brake setup. This, after only putting about 300 miles on the Stoptech Z36 HD Truck and Tow brake kit and redoing the rear drums. Heck, I haven't even towed with it yet. That's pretty disappointing. I expected better from this kit.

It will be interesting to see if my gas mileage improves at all. I'll be driving the truck daily for a while to get my 500 miles on these new gears as soon as possible, so I'm able to tow again. They've been properly heat-cycled multiple times, but I'm still going to follow the recommended break-in procedure.

I'll report back with more as I put some more time in behind the wheel.

 

I wanna do the DD exhaust and injectors so bad. How big are your tires?

Awesome report. Those 4:88 gears are tempting. Your vibrations and the speedo seem to be easy fixes. Are your brakes under warranty?

Something is wrong...there is no way you should be feeling braking vibrations like that in 300 miles if everything was installed correctly and are the right specs for your truck's current setup. If you are getting braking vibration already I would immediately look over all the brake/suspension/steering/driveline components you recently changed. Good luck.

Order the plug and play version and give them a note about how long of a wiring loom you need. They use metric so convert feet to meters, I think 2.5 meters would be pretty good.

Oh, and I'm doing one more mod today. I am down at Wet Okole having them install front seat covers.

Throttle response must be real snappy though. I've always been curious what my truck would drive like on stock tires, that's probably about what hos truck is like.

 

I bought mine bone stock. It was peppy AF. It still gets it in the higher rpms when the vvti kicks in with the 33.5s lol

 

Fixed my (water leaking on to passenger floor) problem.
The rubber or foam gasket that's under the plastic screw thing was leaking. Popped it out and put clear RTV in it's place.
Gave the truck a bath and it's all better.

 

Thing that had me scratching my head on this cowl repair when I opened mine up was those plastic screw clips drip into a wide open reservior channel under the cowl. The cowl channels water into the gutter and out some weep holes at each corner of the truck. These plastic clips/rubber washers leak right into the channel. Maybe I missed something during the analysis?

 

going to start on the t-belt and seals sunday. hopefully i dont do something stupid... (aka get performance cams) so tempting. but alas. i bought a new toolbox for work soooo cant be doing that.
