CV Axle Concern

picked up my truck today after getting 7” BDS Coilover Kit with Fox 2.5’s and adding 37” Ridge Grapplers. Everything is amazing, except when I turn, I get some clicking and feedback in my steering wheel. I’m afraid it’s the CV axle. I have taken a picture of it and a video of the play in it, but it won’t let me post it. It just has a bit of play that makes a noise when it’s pushed up on.

Could the clicking be from the bumping of the CV (play) or would it be internal and a cause for concern? Did the shop that installed my Kit cause this, because it was never an issue before?

I have the same thing going on. It clanks over small sharp bumps. Hoping to get it resolved this week with the ECGS bushing, but I'm not 100% that's the solution.

Do you have a different drop installed? The CV angle looks steep.

 

That angle does look pretty extreme. It’s possible the shop was hard on it and overextended it. I don’t normally suggest a diff drop but that looks like it might help.

 

Mine looks almost the same, I'm on a 6" kit on 35's

 

CV angle is your problem. Too steep and if you continue to drive it like that you will need new axles soon.

 

I'm sure you know or have heard don't be turning in 4wd while on pavement, it's bad on the 4wd

It came with a diff drop and I was under the impression that the kit was supposed to maintain all those angles

Larger tires n wheels plus extended steering knuckles are going to tweak those angles

That video I wouldn't worry as much as far as that play goes what about if you grab the shaft of the CV axle when my driver side was bad it would move alot back and forth that way

 

What he said. If you have a lot of miles on the CV joint that’s your canary and it will go. You usually start to notice during turns because it increases the angle and the Load on the joint.

Is it hard to replace? I work in the oilfield, middle of nowhere and can’t be stranded if it goes.

 

First pic makes 37’s look skinny which I love skinny tires but not many in 17” wheel size. Good looking truck, Cv’s look strangled. Take it back to the shop.

 

Going back tomorrow to get CB shackles installed. What should I have them do regarding the CV’s?

Take it to the shop who did it and have them fix the angles.
They are fairly easy to replace but you gotta have parts and the new one is just going to do the same thing until the angles are fixed.

 

Curious does the cutting of the rear crossmember have anything to do with CV axle angles?

Just for diff drop. Drive shift would hit it . I'm really surprised the O.P. is having this issue I have only really heard good things about bds lift kits

 

Like I said earlier, I'm on a 6" kit, my CV axle angles almost just like that, no issues here

 

Ikr I get lost in this and cant keep up sorry but you are running the r.c. lift like I am also right ?

 

It's not the shop's fault so much as the kit itself. That CV angle is excessive and will lead to damage. I currently fit 35" tires on my truck by lifting the front about 1.5" and no lift in the back. Unless you really like the look of the 7" lift you could fit your tires with a lot less lift.

Not sure what other lift he can do for 37x12.5x18 I cant fit those on my truck lifted 6" unless I cut on some stuff. O and have you ever drove a big lifted truck before . I did it once yrs ago and always wanted one and now that I do won't ever have one not lifted high unless I'm just to old to get in Haha

 

Cutting is a way better solution than more lift. As the suspension cycles the larger tire will have to go somewhere; this means that you have to limit travel by adjusting bumpstops or cutting until the tires clear anyway. @papasmurf

 

I had 35’s with just the Stock TRD pro level, but I wanted to get higher and run 37’s .. I’ve never heard a bad thing about the BDS coilover Kit and love it. I just want to make sure I don’t screw something up - how do I remedy the CV angles? Have them dial the coils down?

 

No, there’s no RCM cut but I just looked and apparently the kit is supposed to come with a rear drop crossmember??

They just added the blocks, the 2.0’s and relocated brakes in the rear.
