Hello, I'm new to this and this is my first post. I bought a 2019 TRD sport in November. The sensor behind the grill has been nothing but a headache. Not only doesn't shut off if it's dirty or covered in snow. It also shuts off seemingly almost everyday when I get off of work in the afternoon. Has anyone else had problems with us? I called Toyota and they didn't seem to have this happening often.

This seems to be an unfortunately common issue with the radar/TSS. I've learned that it's not uncommon for the radar to go offline during rain and snow, any type of obstruction on the front sensor can cause it to temporarily go offline. However, the people having the real bad issues are having to deal with the thing going offline when it's sunny and clear out. I'm not sure who you spoke with from Toyota, but this is a common enough problem that they are either grossly uninformed or lying if they tell you they don't see this happening.

Every day, and on the same stretch of road at the same time. It is the way the sunlight hits my sensor, it just faults out for a few seconds then comes back. It also happens if the sensor is covered in mud, dirt, bugs etc... The salesman was honest enough to warn me about it during the test drive.

I have seen that aftermarket company that makes a bracket to install this further back. Any experience with this company? I would like to put on the TRD Pro grill so I was already looking at this. And the grill without the sensor is prettcheap at under $300

And yes I understand I live in Minnesota and we had a record-breaking season for snow but, this sensor is going off when it's bright and sunny out and my truck is right out of the car wash. It's almost a daily thing leaving work in the afternoon despite the weather.

Dealership is lying if they tell you they have not heard of this issue.

Common issue Toyota knows about. Go tell the dealership to get their head out of their a**.

It seems people either have the issue or they don’t. Which makes it seem like there’s an issue with a part from a certain vendor and not the other.

This has been my thought too. I bought my 18’ last August and have had no issues. Lifted it in early January and no issues. It’s a part and quality control issue. Most likely as you mentioned, same part sourced from different vendors and some get the bad ones.

Its not just a Toyota issue. It is the nature of the tech. I've seen it happen on different manufacturers. The sensors receive valid data and react accordingly. They need to refine the process to weed out targets. I don't know how you do this with "radar".

The original fixed they had was to send a certain sensor that was marked a certain way. All that means is they are trying to send a certain manufacture not the other to see if it works. That means they’re thinking the same thing

Well, test drove it and "tested" it and found nothing wrong. I have a folder now saved on my phone as TSS shit. I think I'm currently at 15 pictures on different days and that's just in the last month. I bought my 2019 at the end of November. In the next couple weeks I'm going to be putting in a 6 inch lift and I'm sure that's going to make it go off even more. It's just going to come down to them giving me a new one since it's obviously under the bumper to bumper warranty not to mention the extended one that I bought.

This kind of reminds me of my last truck. It was a 2015 Ram 1500 and at 15 miles per hour the doors would lock along with the tailgate. The tailgate actuator would overcompensate and drop your tailgate. I dealt with this for months before I finally just disconnected it and lo and behold.. the dealerships that knew nothing about this and had never heard of it despite the countless YouTube videos all the sudden had to fix it because of a recall.

Mine used to shut off everyday leaving work, clean dirty snow rain sun didn't matter. Now it is pretty much off all the time. I have not been able to get into the dealer for the airbag TSB which I thought I read may have fixed the issue? Plan to address next time I am in there.

Glad to know it's not just me. Mine does it on the same stretch of road when I'm going to lunch. Seems like it does it worse on overcast days but some have reported sunny days causing it too.

Mine does it occasionally then goes away. Not a major issue for me. Minor annoyance. After owning a Turd Gen Tacoma, the Tundra is a dream even if it does have a quirk or two. Toyota will eventually get the TSS figured out....I have faith because it is a "safety system"...

Update: Since I posted this question it was nice to see Toyota have a recall on the system. I have had no issues since.

Kudos for coming back with the update!

Other than 2 times in extremely heavy freeway rain, I have had no issues with the TSS system. Purchased in April 2018.
