Bad day so far for Tundra :(

Well. Found the box rust this morning. Then parked my trailer after pulling it down the highway and found it was covered in grease. Drivers side cv joint has failed too!

At first I was hoping for just the boot to be ripped. But at about 50 kph it has a violent shake.

The only advantage to any of this is that I’ll be able to work on the tundra before my house Reno’s are done haha. While I replace cv, I’ll add my diff drop and driver side coach builder shim to take care of tundra lean.




Who has replaced a cv joint? Fairly doable? I’m very mechanical so not worried. Any special tools needed? TIA

A big socket in the 30+mm's, can't remember the size but it's in the garage. An air impact will definetely help with that hub nut.

 

Good to know thanks. The air impact is covered. I’ll have to pull it to get the socket size.

 

39mm socket. There's a snap ring on the diff side, Youtube for a tutorial or a welding a plate to the cv housing to help pry off off. I've blown 2 driver sides.

pretty common on Toyotas as soon as you start lifting and playing with suspension angles. It sucks but it's not the end of the day.

 

Think I should change the passenger one while I’m under there?

 

Taking woops offroad at highway speeds. This was all before an air locker. Now I do the same in 2wd with the rear locked and no more blown cv joints.

 

Well. I ordered both sides with heavy duty boots for $420. Masel do both while I’m under there!

 

Depending on the mileage I'd guess. I paid less than $50 shipped from low mileage passenger side damaged trucks from Ebay.

 

Oh mine is miled out for sure. 470000km on those cv joints. 10000 of which had a 3.5” lift haha. Gotta get the diff drop installed

 

Make sure to replace input axle seals on front diff and take ur time not to screw it up.

Toyota has a box rust problem. Showed my dealer the rust on my 2011 tundra. Toyota replaced the complete box and tailgate, no cost to me.

 

Change the whole axel it's easier and doesn't cost much more.

 

SDHQ has heavy duty boots too.

 

Sounds like you've already ordered complete axles. I just rebuilt mine and it's a super messy job. I'm glad I now know how to do and next time I'll farm it out to someone else.

So much easier to replace the complete unit as Liquid said. Rebuilding sucks and is messy as hell, I won't ever do it again. CV boots for $33 plus shipping with a headache or $40 w/free shipping for a low mileage complete unit.

 

I wanna pull my drop in liner this summer. I might try my hand at a diy bedliner then put the drop in back in, or maybe just fluid film and put it back in. It stays dry under my tonneau back there but I wanna be one step ahead. Paying for linex is not an option unfortunately

Ya I bought full new axles. I’m mechanical but don’t like getting dirty haha. There’s a fine line

Yes thank goodness! At the end of the day my favourite place in the world is my shop. So it’s really not the end of the world
