2 Meter and 70 cm would be the most commonly used freq for a tech.

This wasn't my review... I'm a lowly Tech, so I have no clue how to test this stuff. What I posted was a review by someone way more experienced than myself for the UV-82HP sold directly by Baofeng USA.

Very interested in the one you posted though. Might have to pick one up to loan out, "Just in case".

As for the comment made by Papa, I agree w you. I wouldn't encourage people to break the law in any way. At the same time, if you are using it responsibly and not interfering with others and using good etiquette, I'm certainly not going to go narc you out or anything.

Is there a secret password to announce so they know you're licensed? How would they know you aren't?

Ever walk into a bar, the music stops, and everyone turns around to look at you? Yeah, its kind of like that :D

Seriously though, there's etiquette. Some written (that you'd learn as you work toward a lic), most unwritten. Its stupid obvious when someone is on and doesn't follow it.

But to specifically answer your question: you announce your call sign (assigned to you by the FCC when you earn your lic) when transmitting, and/or provide it when asked. And that call sign is lookup-able online. If you provide one that doesn't exist, you're done. If you provide one that does exist but isn't yours, you're still done but it will take a little longer for the sleuths to figure out. The former will probably just earn you scorn. The latter will probably get you reported to the FCC (along with your precise location... yep, that's easily figureoutable); in the ham world, that's the equivalent of identity theft.

Been wheeling 6 years once a month or more on average and never had anyone on a simplex channel challenge us. Only a handful of times have we ever been stepped on and we just switch to backup channel.

@Cement yeah that's understandable, using someone else's info is worse. I'll uh, let my friend know.

    All good then.

Remember I'm no snob. I get it.

But its important to understand we're talking theory vs real world. You're talking real world. I'm just waving my hand saying Cool! but in theory... just making sure folks understand so they can make informed decisions.

Edit: also mean to say simplex (HT to HT) is pretty much ignored by the "community" in my experience, unless you happen to have configured yourself to step on a repeater in the area or are using designated freqs reserved for gov or commercial purposes. Its when you cross those lines that you gotta be a whole lot more careful. Easier to do than you might think, if you don't know what you're doing.

I just don't think we should have to be licensed for simplex use. Thats BS. Fact is 2m is the new CB

    Just saw your edit

YEah there shouldn't be any difference between simplex and CB as far as licensing.

*shrug*. That's a political battle you'd have to pick with the entire ham world + FCC. In the mean time, dem rulez are da rulez.

In the mean time I'll be a pirate with zero fear about someone triangulating me and knocking on my truck window.

wtf would they even do if they found me?

Pretty sure the first offense is a fine + probation. After that, jail time. FCC doesn't mess around, and honestly, probably for good reason. You're dabbling in functional areas, tech and frequency spectrums that many police, military, EMS, education, airports, municipalities etc etc etc rely on.

Check this out. You might find it interesting. Good way to look up who's using what in areas you plan to be in. Steer clear and you're probably good. *But don't break the law* :D

No I'm saying, ham nerd walks up to my truck. Then what? does he bring LEO with him? Does he do a citizens arrest? Does he write down my license plate and report it? If so, how does he prove it was me and not some other truck nearby? Actually, he can't prove anything, a lawyer would have to prove the case

Can't help ya. I haven't heard of any case where a ham walked up on a truck. Although I've seen some pretty pissed off hams where people were using their backyard antennas illegally, who also have telescopes...

No I think what's more likely is if you did show up on someone's radar, they'd work together to figure things out then submit the offense to the FCC (along with your licence plate?). What happens then? Probably nothing. Probably.

Well there's no such thing as a "simplex" frequency*. Simplex is a method of communication. Frequencies are frequencies. So long as you dont use a frequency to do whatever (simplex, duplex) that would piss someone else off, you're probably off the radar.

*Edit: There are frequency ranges set aside for simplex communication, but within the context of this convo these ranges still fall within the bands that require an FCC license to legally transmit on.

Thank you. Thats all I needed to hear. Trust me, none of the guys who wheel with me are worried about the legalities.

there is a group of freqs set aside for simplex communication. So I refer to them as simplex freqs.

Papasmurf, I was only trying to give you enough info to get it right for local and long distance comms.

I deal with your fellow surface navy operators all the time. I know why your gear is always broken. The good news is that it keeps me busy running around fixing all the stuff you break (either through ignorance or just plain stupidity).

Sure, you can operate all you want. A monkey with a machine gun can kill lots of people, but he is still an untrained operator of a tool. Primates with a PTT switch can communicate with others too. You just don't understand when it is broken... RM or ET, you are still a blackshoe.

I'll bet you just paint over rust too.

    Have fun out there.

Nor could ANYONE actually keep up w/ you even if they were trying to bust you. I can see it now...

    Mike: We've identified an illegal communication at 35 7.84N by 116 5.17W
John: I'll be there in just a minute

    Mike: Now He's at 35 12.36N 115 54.43W
John: That's 5 miles away!! You sure he isn't in a private aircraft?!?!?!

    Nope... He's SGU!!

If I ever get to run with you guys, remind me to tell you the "helicopter" story. The upshot was the red face cop was all too happy to tell me how I might have outrun his rig, and I might have even outrun the 'eye in the sky'... but I didn't outrun the radio.

    True story.

Sadly, you're correct. I've heard "Fourty roger, I'll be destinated in a few, catch you on the flip." on 2 meters occasionally. I fear the next step is echo mikes, roger beeps, and operators barking (an actual memory from my CB days in the 70's) to identify themselves. It's what inspired me to get my Ham license. Currently, I'm waiting for my 40 year pin from QCWA to arrive.

Had to read this post even though I am not into citizen band radios.
Bringing back memories of my father who was passionate about his ham radio set ups.
I still remember his call letters WA6JOL WILLIAN ABLE SIX JIG OCEAN LOVE I can hear him now speaking to one of his many ham buddies from all over the country!
