What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Its 4x4, I saw a transfer case under there.

I wish to have a manual t case as well... the actuator driven ones love to fail.

Exercise them once a week. Keeps the cack off.

 

This can't be emphasized enough in keeping your actuator working properly. I switch into 4x4 every time it rains for a mile or two basically to keep the whole 4x4 system from sitting static for too long...

 

Interesting. I wasn't sure if on pavement 4X4 engagement was a good idea. Speeds below 40ish I assume?

 

Butting in here.

4x4 Hi at lower speeds is good to exercise the actuator. Try to do this on straight runs of road to limit turns. I do this once or this a week for a mile or two.

4x4 Lo should only be done in loose off-road driving. I do it anyway maybe once every couple months driving only a block or two.

You can actually see the engagement times improve the more you use the 4x buttons. If you forget, or haven’t used the features in sometime, there is a few second delay.

Read your manuals.

 

Yea, what he says below. There is no issue going over 40 mph (I'm not on the freeway, so it usually doesn't get above 50), but the key thing here is I do it when it's wet so if for some reason I end up making an unplanned turn it's less likely to cause a problem...

 

All sorts of neat noises happen when i switch in and out of 4x4 before the truck has warmed up at -35C. Heard a lovely clunk and had to wait almost 10 full seconds for it to engage this morning.

I would love to swap in the RA61F 6 speed from the FJ. They also had full time 4wd with a center Torsen diff. Seen it swapped into a 4th gen 4runner with the 1gr but not the 2uz. Pipe dreams...

 

Yep my wheels are 7.5 in width the Methods are 8.5 So I should be able to use my tires I have now, they are almost new.
Hopefully I'll be able to sell my old rims and get a few bucks back. They are not in the best of shape but still an upgrade for some one out there.

 

‘Clunk clunk’ fixed using a couple composite shims from big box. Thanks to whoever recco’d the silencer pads a few weeks back. Forgot who, but I shot it down thinking I’d get new springs. Anyways, the idea led me to todays repair.

This method today I just used a flat pry bar and baby sledge and wedged open the rear spring rear overlay flaps and shoved the tip of shim with flexible adhesive on one side into the pryed up flap. Jacked each side up first to relieve pressure to make it all happen.

Drives smoother now. Amazing. Bonus on top of the clunk no longer there. Maybe I’ll do the front flaps of the rear springs after seeing how things go these next few months driving. .50c and about 1hours work with drive time.

If I got a T case, a front diff, a pair of axles and spindles, yeah. At some point I may convert, it's been on my mind since Mustang did it but so many car projects stand in line first.

Something liberating about 4Hi on the fly. No need to slow down, stop, and engage. Just touch the button and start stinging like bee on your transition. Only drawback is when I confuse recirc button with 4by.

 

Yes. Thank you! These springs are still working. They splayed a bit from towing and hard use in the early years. The clunk has been going on for 2-3 years. Got the leafs lined back up a few months back saw one missing and another cockeyed, but never thought a little plastic washer/wedge could make such a difference.

You saved me $$$ and headache of having to even think about doing spring suspension work. Thanks again!!!

 

Lol I’ve never owned a truck without a real lever. It’s odd for me. At least this truck already had the transfer case replaced because the actuator failed

 

The j shift Toyota’s are still on the fly. You Just use the lever. Unless you have a non add diff
