Wheel/brake issue

Hi everyone,

New guy to the forum. Have a question for you before I take my truck to the dealership.

Today I had to brake hard on the freeway to avoid an accident in front. Everyone was ok in it and nothing happened to us, luckily.

Afterwards, when I used the brakes we heard a clunking noise. When we got home my son took the video below.

The truck has about 3500 miles, barely 1.5 months old. It has a dealership applied lift and leveling kit, wife and I do not know much about lifting trucks.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks!

 

There's a possibility the dealer installed lift was poorly done. Either way it's under warranty and they will fix it. I would not wrench on it, they might blame you.

Welcome! That actually is a exact mimic, sound and pop of what happened to my truck when I broke the CV's at pismo. Look under the truck behind the tire itself and start grabbing things and shaking them. That should at least get you going in the right direction but something is clearly broken.

My bet is on the CV. It's exactly what mine did once I got it on pavement. And there's nothing else rotationally that can make that popping noise from the front end.

 

This would be the best thing to do, especially if you're not mechanically inclined in the lifted truck world.

 

I had the cam bolts come loose on mine, it did make a slight popping noise but not to the extent of his video. The CV's binding up then the force rotating them past the bind causing them to brake free and roll forward again, then bind up and repeat is the only thing I've experienced that created a replica of his video. I'm curious to hear what the dealer says the issue is though!

 

Thank you everyone! No bolts were loose that I can see. Good call on the tow truck, didn't even think of that, time to use the free roadside service to get it there.

Shake the front axles.

 

It is at the dealership and we got a rental. Will update the thread when I know more. The service manager himself drove it and took it back to the service station.

Did you see his video and the loaded up tension releasing? What else could create that besides CV's binding up.....That would seriously suck though I agree.

 

Cam bolts could also be ball joint failure even tie rod... More or less improper torque specs where used causing the failure and my bet is on that unless shady lift was used...

 

The dealership sent the car over to the shop that did the lift for them. Paperwork says they just tightened all suspension components and checked alignment. We will see if it comes back or not.
